That's because there is none. Biden said so yesterday. He will not fight a war on Ukrainian soil. The US, EU / NATO will not provided any support / defense of Ukraine.
Not kicking Russia out of SWIFT is also unbelievable. EU member states still want the ability to pay Russian backed business for gas / oil and luxury goods. The same business that are likely supporting Putin and his war effort. It's actually scandalous.
He has a point. Pushing buttons on computers and Biden talking about revisiting the effects of these sanctions in a few weeks and months doesn't help much when there's Russian troops and armor on the ground and in the air of his country and people dying right now.
The problem is that unless they want to risk a far wider conflict and potentially a nuclear war which Putin has made not so veiled threats over, there's not much more the West can do.
The Government put themselves in this Position. The west played them and they were stupid enough trust them. Let the people flee, dont force them to fight and die because of stupid politicians
Putin must feel very comfortable with the sanctions announced so far and the push back from Germany etc against even that
But we are just lying down in the face of evil. And it is not going to stop with Ukraine…
Nonsense. Belarus just been annexed by Russia effectively, it was not involved with joining NATO.
That's what would happen Ukraine also.
And would be happening to the Baltic States if they weren't in NATO.
Not the thread for it but there's a massive difference between genuine refugees like we've seen fleeing the cities in Ukraine in the last 24 hours, and chancers touring through Europe looking for the best handouts.
Would you be so accepting of having to leave your home and everything that you ever worked for
Ukraine isn't important enough to anyone that they're willing to see their own people die to defend it. Even cutting off gas will cause a lot of hardship in a lot of European countries, so it's unlikely to happen cos of that.
The same would be true if Russia pushed on into Poland. The issue is that that the west is not allied to Ukraine and is ok with it being obliterated.
He need not worry, the UN is voting today and will very swiftly respond. Rumour has it a fleet of B52s are already loaded with thoughts and prayers ready to be deployed.
Ireland did invite France and Spain to help fight off the English but the English were already a massive threat and were occupying our island
The reason Ukraine was invaded is because they are Not already in NATO or the EU.
The invasion happened because Ukraine were politically isolated and vulnerable.
The non aligned former USSR countries should immediately form a mutual defence treaty amongst each other because the writing is on the wall if Putin is successful in Ukraine
If they want to fight they will dont force them to fight and die. If it is like Ireland they probably cant afford a house anyway
Sanctions aren't going to stop Russian tanks and air power from rolling over Ukraine. ATGMs and manpads will.
Sanctions will help to get rid of Putin down the road, but they won't help now.
Is it possible to die from cringe?
It's one thing conquering fields, it's another going into and taking a city. They'll be fighting street by street.
The soldiers on snake island were sitting ducks, despite how brave they were. They had no way to fight back at all. I’m all for the west putting up a united front to halt Putin in his murderous tracks but forcing people to fight doesn’t feel right. Probably won’t have to force most people to defend their home country anyway, as history as repeatedly shown.
This kind of self indulgent narcissistic sh1te makes my blood boil
Last time I checked, NATO doesn't rock up and force countries into their alliance. The country in question has to actually apply for that, at a minimum.
Essentially, Putin's forces are invading in order to prevent a foreign country from exercising its sovereign right to join NATO if it wants to (and there's been a lot of ummming and awwing over that).
Even if Russia wins this initial conflict, which is likely, they will find out, as all powers who try this kind of thing do, that you can't bomb a people into your control. This invasion will only make Ukrainians think that Russia is the greater of two evils. Long term, Putin has f*cked Russia's relationship with Ukraine.
People are very exercised by this invasion and it's the way they do things these days by talking to their peeps!
Good to see Ireland backing the strongest sanctions. Looks like toughest sanctions are being held back if things get worse. Worse, can you believe it, tanks rolling through the country and they are waiting for it to get worse.
It's all over folks. Ukraine has been led up the garden path and deserted
So the chernobyl higher radioactive activity has been confirmed by Ukraine.
However, it is an insignificant rise and it's due to rising dust from the military equipment.
Russians are now in Kyiv
A generation of infantilised attention-seeking muppets trying to be the next "viral" thing by latching on to whatever "cause" is trending is what it is.
It's insulting to what's going on on the ground.
Putin was right to feel comfortable about the EU response.
The reason the harshest restrictions aren't imposed because the west are split. Some don't want them removed from SWIFT
Talk of the chernobyl site showing signs of increased radiation
And this is why the EU will never work as a political entity. There IS no European identity - just a collection of individual nations with their own agendas, cultures, histories and indeed historical dislike or distrust of their "allies" and who see themselves as German, Italian, French, Irish etc first. It's not like the US where for all it's faults, people see themselves as Americans first.
Putin of course knows that too and has played on it accordingly.
