I'd guess those forces aren't for a move into Poland but south towards Lviv in order to sever the connections with Poland and make both an escape there and resupply from Poland difficult if not impossible.

There's a growing number of Republicans in the US saying that, if push came to shove, the US wouldn't respond militarily to a Russian invasion of any of the Baltic states. Yes, it's part of Nato (Art. 5 etc.), but the US wouldn't really respond to create a nuclear war.
Many citizens in the US think, "Why?".
Russia is responding to this perceived weakness.
Many US citizens can't even point these places out on a map.
Whether they are right or wrong is a separate question.
But politics finds itself huddling behind what the population want, rather than what is the right thing to do.
