What is his objective?
They must have circled back to him....good and he should be called on it.
Let's see if the other 3 clown MEPs from here who voted against it admit they were wrong....I doubt it given Mick Wallace and Clare Daly's joint statement...like they are some power couple.....absolute useless tossers the lot of them
nonsense, he was dead right, bullies need to be put down
I'm in two-minds about sanctions.
On the one hand, sanctions are better than nothing; they are a non-military source of punishment.
But, as we've seen in the post-WWI era, economic sanctions can be harnessed by dictatorial forces to create a pretext for grievance, widespread national support, and then used as a pretext for wider war.
Most ordinary Russian people will be victims of sanctions, and may end up supporting Putin-esque rogue policies as a consequence.
It's hard to strike a balance, but history teaches us that sanctions don't always have the intended effects we would like them to have.
A massive concern that some seem to be overlooking is if the take over of Ukraine doesn't go to plan and Putin starts to lose face, how far and what weapons of destruction would this mad dictator be prepared to use. Very dangerous place were in at the moment, time for cool heads and no rash decision making. Hopefully sense prevails.
Their aggressive expansion during the soviet era sets the precedent.
The number of human lives lost in Soviet Russia far exceeds the horrors of the Nazis.
Putin was an instrument of that regime, he's a man who was poised to be a soviet "hero" but sadly for him that poisonous system crumbled before he got where he wanted to go. So he's continued the spirit of his beloved USSR, creating a climate of fear and intimidation where anyone who opposes him is taken care of.
None of this is a shock and there's no irony in how Russia are behaving, they were on the right side of history when the Nazis invaded but that was a one off.
Luke “Ming” Flanagan is calling putin a scumbag.
To avoid giving even the slightest inadvertent signal that NATO might use those weapons preemptively against Russia. Who knows what a nuclear-armed madman backed into a corner might do.
Horrendous to think that human beings are doing that to each other because of one man's ego.
Shameful
Probably the first and last time I'll agree with him.
He has been so vague about the objectives that he can withdraw at any stage and claim victory.

Post WW1 was an era that was completely different to today. Unlike China the flow of information isn't as restricted in Russia.
A military response has to be avoided because Putin has clearly come unhinged and any such action would almost certainly lead to nuclear war.
The concerns of recouping money from Russia if they are removed from swift should be set aside. If sanctions are going to work they need to have their effects felt as quickly as possible.
General mobilisation of the population across Ukraine.
What does this mean in reality?
I thought they already mobilised reservists and so on, and were willing to offer weapons to civilians.
What extra does this provide?
Probably obsolves citizens of the possibility of being prosecuted if they manage to kill any Russian soldiers.
Does Ukraine not have it's fighter jets in the air? Are they not defending themselves from the air?

Luke “Ming” Flanagan is saying he was wrong. It does seem like its dawning on him what a stupid move voting against that resolution today. I wouldn’t hold my breath of daly and Wallace having a road to Damascus moment.
nuke him before he nukes us
I love your sig :
"Whilst you're debating pronouns and statues and apologizing for your past, the real enemy - Russia and China - look on and laugh, and take advantage of our clear and present weakness" -- Eskimohunt
Wow...
Did you have that up before ?
bbc news website sazs Ukranian men are forbidden from leaving the Country.
He's been quite clear about his objectives because they've been stated and restated by himself and his cronies. No NATO for Ukraine and Ukraine brought to heel.
He can say what he likes in terms of the outcome of this conflict, but if he fails to achieve those two things, it will be etched on his face.
Actually, I do think the Western world is distracted by dopey nonsense - such as pronouns and statues and correcting our history and language, and so on.
Meanwhile, our actual enemies look on and say, "Well, these guys are weak!" - and act.
So yes, there's a direct link between the two.
The West projects weakness and fear of war.
That means our enemies can act with strength - and through the means of war.
Why would anyone give a damn about what Nigel Garage thinks. Of course he's wrong, he's always wrong.
No winners there. But sadly some will think this will work.
Sweden is unfamous for changing coats on the go. In WWII they declared independancy and were happily doing business with Nazis, after the war they were happily handing back all refuges from Baltic states to Stalin for extermination. Sweden keeps all the option so can always side with whoever runs the show, like a prostitute.
Tbh if this operation goes badly wrong for Putin he may find a Makarov pointing at the back of his head ready to be fired by another member of his junta.
