I just don't buy the NATO argument anyway. IMHO this is more about the authoritarian Russian regime under Puttin being scared of democracy taking root in their doorsteps.
For instance the Baltic states officially joined NATO in 2004 just over a decade post regaining their independence from Russia. Puttin was Russian president at the time yet he didn't invade them to stop them joining NATO.
