God help him if he moves on Iceland
whats the point if a nation like russia lead by a lunatic like putin can invade who ever they see fit and if anyone fights back they will use nukes, backing down from there threat only encourages it more. This bluff needs to be called. Cant let bullies like that do as they like or they will never stop.
We're the US not led by a senile lamb NATO would be the difference in deterring the invasion of ukraine.
Ukraine is a very, very big country. Getting 60 or even 100km in doesn't mean very much.
Ask the Germans.
Theres no impediment there. Its just flat land and a bunch of farmers. I doubt the Ukrainians would concentrate any troops so close to the border with an overwhelming force sitting right behind. Their best hope is to strike convoys from distance, get the lead group far enough away from support and hit them hard. The only thing that will put a halt to this is not sanctions or financial penalties, its lots of dead Russian soliders. It might take lots of dead Ukrainian soldiers to achieve that but the alternative is to spend the rest of their life under the Russian thumb.
If Putin succeeds here, the Baltic states are next.
It appears to me as if Russian forces went in expecting the Ukrainian Armed Forces to collapse in on themselves like they had in 2014. From what I've seen, they're putting up one hell of a fight and inflicting surprising casualties on the attackers. Depending on how much Putin is willing to commit, this could still go either way.
A lot of propaganda and wishful thinking floating about. As much as I hate the idea of it, the country could fall very soon.
A one million man army is irrelevant in modern times. Technology, training and organisation is far more important than numbers. No need for Russia to take every building in every city. Much more effective to just destroy the military hardware.
There's a golden opportunity sitting in Mali right now. A contingent of the Wagner group. Sitting ducks for an all out state level wipeout if someone has the balls.
They have been very busy effective against Russian armour in Syria and iraq
Unlikely- the resentment for Russia is very deep. Much of the old Ottoman Empire is part of southern Russia and would be regarded in turkey as theirs
When you stand up to a bully, you cannot be held responsible for what the bully does next. We should not be afraid of defending Ukraine because of what Putin might do.
I'm giving the US and NATO the benefit of the doubt that they're listening intently to what their intelligence agencies are telling them, and acting on that advice with a strong roadmap of escalation. The ultimate aim here should be repelling the Russian incursion with the minimum loss of life. A trigger-happy US president could easily lead to more suffering in Ukraine than a more nuanced response.
I could of course, be misplacing that trust and they're going to let him do what he wants in the hope that he stops in Kyiv.
Sure there is and you're feeding one narrative here yourself. Meanwhile the UK & US will announce new sanctions very shortly, Boris at 5.00 and Biden at 5.30.
Absolute heartbreaking, its real mark of shame on the west to allow this to happen. And anyone that supports putin or russia really need to have a good look at themselves.
If there's one thing I've learned through all this it's the "hipsters that are trying to be contrary" are the ones that disgust me more than anyone.
I'd actually have more respect for someone who admitted that they admire Putin and love watching him brutalising weaker nations. At least that'd be honest and I'd respect them on some level for fronting up to their messed up desires.
With the hipsters you have to listen to their oh so tedious act of "I'm no fan of Putin but when you look into it this is actually all NATO's fault..". The same people will unironically have Palestinian flags in their twitter profile and voice their support for ANTIFA while turning a blind eye to the guy who is literally behaving like Hitler right now. They sicken me.
Absolutely classic victim blaming there. And we're paying this one's salary while she junkets around with her brain-dead tax dodging boyfriend.
Boris live in parliament now
Might not make a huge difference in the main battle but it will in the insurgency that follows. History has shown it is impossible to control a country that really does not want to be controlled. Even if they fall in a week, Putin will be living with the legacy of today for however long he lives. A Ukrainian IRA or Taliban type scenario is something he needs like a hole in the head.
What's meant by that? Did they think they were just going to drop in without resistance?
It's as if they believe that being against the US-led invasion of Iraq and being against the Russian invasion of Ukraine are contradictory positions. That is of course horse-shít, but these are people who view politics in the same way that a soccer fan views soccer teams.
Was thinking Erdogan might get hungry eyes but he knows he'll get nothing from Europe in the long term.
This could be the biggest mistake Putin ever made. Basically severing ties with the majority of world. China won't commit fully to their side as their own economy would collapse.
Also, I can see NATO becoming even stronger after this.
I think it means they were told they would be fighting nazis/terrorists or some other bogeyman not the Ukrainian army.
Boris has just banned Aeroflot from UK.
My understanding is that none of the T-14 Armata are in play. Only a 100 units for testing have been delivered.
The bulk of the Russians tanks are t72s and t80s so wouldn't be the most modern of tanks.
I've also seen photos showing the anti-drone/anti-missile cages on some of the t72s becoming detached. Tbh if I was a Russian service man in one of those I'd be very nervous as the Ukrainians have some serious portable anti-tank firepower now.
UK are going really hard on the sanctions. Assets of VTB frozen, Russia barred from raising sovereign debt through UK markets.
Incredible if true
Aeroflot banned from landing on British soil.
russian stocks down 45%, ruble in the gutter
Yes and with the drones in to the equation the Ukrainians while small can potentially do a lot of damage with access to the right modern weaponry. It's a pity they didn't get Apache helicopters.
