I am picturing Goths and vandals en masse crossing into Roman territory and Constantinople(the superpower of the day) unable to defend its borders, handing territory and military/court positions to the invaders while living lives of great luxury in the unaffected areas.

Correct, the same thing would happen to any Russian army facing off against any NATO army. The problem is the Russian army view nuclear weapons as a tactical weapon in addition to strategic weapons.
There won't be a war between NATO and Russia because that would vaporise Europe/Russia and the US pretty quickly.
Hard to know but there is a potential that this could turn into a NATO/Ukraine vs Russia issue.
