All diplomatic efforts from the Russians were in bad faith, they were designed to fail and they were merely following the motions.
Listen to the rhetoric about Ukraine, this has been going on for years about how Putin, lukashenko and his other stooges do not believe Ukraine is a sovereign nation, it is offensive, vulgar to them.
IMHO this is about their fear of democracy taking hold in the countries around their authoritarian dictatorships. The Baltic states IMHO were very smart to join NATO or they probably would already have been attacked.

It is interesting that attempts were made by the previous White House administration to completely undermine NATO. It would have been quite worrying if the US was no longer part of NATO.

Bingo. There is a large concentration of Russian ethnics in the Baltics (living happily in increasing prosperity) that would have 100% been attempted to be weaponized by Putin given half the chance. Riga for instance is pretty much a Russian-speaking city. Ham-fisted attempts were made in Estonia to agitate the Russian population, which have proven to be an utter failure because Russians in Estonia live far better lives than Russians in the homeland - and the Estonian government has invested in Russian language media for their minority population to blunt disinformation.
Ukraine and Belarus on one hand and the Baltics on the other are an advertisement why Nato membership was and is essential for their national survival. Make no mistake about it. They are off the menu for the Kremlin, which probably p*sses Putin off no end.
Yeah I saw an interview of a family, young kids, living in their freezing cellar last night absolutely **** it. They were just beyond the area of Russian control. They had a space heater that done basically nothing to warm them up. Poor families, those kids. Breaks my heart, especially when I look at my own.

I feel sick waking up to this. The Ukrainian reports of Russians trying to take Odessa are worse than I thought could happen, as I thought they would stick to the east. Russia really are a rogue state, with their cyberattacks, reckless poisonings of opponents, and sham democracy.

What Ukraine need is an IRA style crew to head for Moscow and start blowing up tourist zones, cars bomb the airport, train station etc and warn Russia that until putin leaves Ukraine then Bombs will continue.
Public pressure on putin would be unreal and it would all be over in a few weeks.

I think to some degree yes but I firmly believe this is the outcome NATO and the US wanted, if Putin wasn't going to pull back with his tail between his legs and he wasn't going to do that.
Ukraine is merely the stage for this inter-imperial conflict, neither sides really care about Ukraine IMO.
If the sanctions were effective this wouldn’t be the third time in so many years. It feels like the west could/should do more. Taipei will be very worried seeing all this.

This is imho the real reason for this action. The real threat to Russia was the Ukraine joining the EU and raising the standard of living there. The Baltic States have a far smaller Russian population. The Ukraine in contrast has a large number of family connections with Russia. 3 million Ukrainians living in Russia a large number of Russians with family in the Ukraine. Any disparity in living standards between mother Russia and it's "Satellite" state of Ukraine would have the Russian proles realising their "leaders" are taking them for a ride and Putin would be in serious trouble. This whole crisis is not about NATO, it's not about external issues, this is for internal power holding reasons.
This Dictator in Russia and his junta need to be faced down or we will be discussing the Baltic States next.
