Holy ****.
Indeed. The sad truth is that Ukraine must wake up and start to defend itself. Nobody wants to die, but if Ukraine does not draw a line in the sand and does not meet any further incursions with a real violence, it will be gobbled up piece by piece.
They can't really do anything militarily. US/Nato and Russians shooting at each is World War 3.
I don't think the Western bloc countries were "tyrannical" during the Cold war. A Visa for the US/EU/UK isn't some sort of global human right, you are allowed into a country at the pleasure of the government basically (absent other agreements like those between EU members). Buying assets in the West, coming to live in the West, getting educated in the West, using the systems here for their own personal benefit is not a right for Russians, or indeed other citizens of autocracies.
I may be pessimistic but I kind of think there's a struggle coming between Western democracies and autocracy (as represented in current crisis by Russia).
Democracies won't be trying to "sell" anything here, they may be trying to survive and part of that is going to be disconnecting + defusing the massive & dangerous risks + dependencies that have built up on likes of Russia/China and that includes IMO cutting off the reasonably free and open access their citziens have had (provided they've had the money to pay to play of course) up to now.
😂
Ah, both sides had ways around this during the Cold War. Same thing will happen again
I think 1 of the world's leading energy suppliers is safe from whatever the energy hungry West will pretend to do, we're fooling ourselves if we think sanctions against a monstrosity such as Russia will be taken seriously as long as they have their hands on the energy valve to turn on/off at will.
The world will roll over at the thought of stricter control of energy, one would be less than cynical if they thought this would see a massive forceful reaction if it was a country surrounded by enemies in the middle east threatening to reduce the flow of oil, Russia on the other hand will dictate to the so called superpowers what's what, Putin doesn't give a fcuk about America or Europe
Do you remember that time you got caught making up stories about people loosing their farms due to inheritance tax because you were too lazy to check your figures? Because this post reminded me of how thick you take people to be when in the end it only makes yourself look like a moron.
Europeans are visibly terrified of Putin because
1) He is probably unstable and
2) He has nukes
The chance for peace with both NATO and Russia out of Ukraine is now gone so it's time to load up the napalm and get real tough.
I wouldnt rule out a military coup in Russia. They must know Putin is not playing with the full deck.
I would not rule out the military generals having quiet little chats in darkened corners.
EU to impose travel bans on ALL 351 members of Russian Parliament who backed breakaway territories
Yeah proxy wars, but this is 2022, not the 60's. Technology, war, everything has changed. Foreign troops cannot intervene in Ukraine, simple as that, the Russians know this.
Biggest state in Europe in 11th Century, and even the Russians claim ancestry from Kievan Rus along with Belarus and the Ukrainians themselves. It was also a part of the vast Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth as the states of Galicia and Volhinya and eventually under the rule of Russia and Catherine the Great through that now well-recognised invitation to Russia to meddle until it was finally screwed over with the second Polish partition which led to a century and more of Russian/Soviet brutality and the odd state-induced famine.
Agreed. We really have to figure out how to manage some of the aspects of western liberal democracy before they inadvertently bring the whole project crashing down. A big one to me is free speech and individualism. You can say pretty much what you want and be who you want. Sounds good, but taken to its extreme, you get fertile ground for so much disinformation and also loss of communal values, and this just pits people against one another, leading to a loss of societal cohesion. China's attitude is they're onto a winner by locking down their Internet and punishing those who don't get with the program.
they always will have Crimea too remember
Putin and his pals have money squirrelled away all around the world. We legally launder Putin money in Ireland.
Russia is used by these people and they aren't trying to make it a better place to live. They'll feel another iron curtain scenario.
Biden addressing nation in next few minutes
.
This is your mind on a steady diet of disinformation.
Let's go Brandon 🤣
Russian peacekeeping at its best
The Ukraine is a largely artificial creation much like Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland from it's outset was partitioned from the island of Ireland and is just 101 years old, Ukraine was not partitioned from Russia or comparable in any sense, the Ukraine is 1139 years old.
Biden is so pathetic - can barely speak the first sentence
He stuttered over a word. Classy move to call someone with a lifelong stutter pathetic. 🙈
I haven’t seen it given any coverage - understandably, considering the preoccupation with countering Russian misinformation - but does anyone have information about the support in Donbas for the separatists? There are certain parallels with the Irish situation. I’m certain that claims of genocide are bogus, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Ukrainian nationalism was alienating the Russian-speaking population.
This is some prime grade bullshit. You could sell it to your farmer friend.
I'm terribly sorry that facts are so inconvenient to you!
Biden confirming that troops will only be used to defend NATO territory.
Coveney wasn't long jumping out of the traps last night with his usual strongly worded condemnation and Martin at the same thing today, do they really think anyone let alone Putin gives a fook what they have to say.
