I meant to give oxy after she lambed
Motillium is indeed for humans but a side effect of the drug domperidone which it contains is an increase in milk production in lactating animals..its often given to women struggling to breastfeed..we also regularly give it.to mares with poor milk and it genuinely does help...
What's the best type of feeder for rearing pet lambs? Bought one last year that runs off a fish tank heater but found it wasn't keeping the milk warm and couldn't keep it working. Was looking at either a shepherdess or ewe 2 this year? Or anyone any suggestions on how to get the current one working.
There's nothing you can do really, Oxytocin is a hormone that just helps milk let down, it could also start her forcing so dont give it.
Motilium is for nausea in humans isn't ti
We have them in three months every year, about the 10th dec until they lamb in march/ early april. They adapt very well, I think the meal and straw feeding suits them better than silage feeding. The bed is drier and the feet are better.
3 euro per head per month for ewes 2 euros for lambs
That the trouble, it’s now when conditions deteriorate badly that keeping sheep get tricky. As you said if you run them over the farm you’ll have no grass. I’ve a field blackened at the moment from poaching trying to save the rest of the fields and it’s not the answer either
how long would ye house sheep for, or feel is the maximum amount Of time you could do so without the effecting the ewe? They are not build for the shed no doubt.
How much per week for winter grazing
Have a ewe here that is due today..softening behind and very red..think she will go in the next day or so..my issue is she had very little springing until a few days ago..is coming now but not near as big as she had last year or any of the others have had this year..anything I can do to help ..or will it come once she lambs..does oxytocin help milk after lambing..motillium would be my other idea..any suggestions?
Oh right, they're breeding hoggets, conditions are horrendous now. even sheep are poaching badly, you'd need a huge area under them even to use cobs
ya probably an option because troughs are a mess at this stage, I feed a high protein to growing sheep, different if your trying to fatten then but I find high protein puts size and a frame on Hoggets
Cobs are probably best of a bad lot in weather like this, peg them around in the field, no troughs necessary,
Trouble is that Corby Rock and Grennans only make them in 18%P so probably too good for your job
Having big trouble feeding sheep outdoors, feeding great quality haylage but they are wasting a crazy amount of it, every day I throw out a few fork fulls around the field as they all can’t eat at the one time but once they take a few mouth fulls they walk on that and it’s never touched again.
today was especially bad when feeding meal,,,,muck everywhere, meal covered in muck from sheep jumping troughs, a pure mess, what would ye advise….they are dry Hoggets so do I stop feeding meaL jmti
It's a long winter after if you lamb early
Lambs a week old should be strong enough to go out even in this weather,
Trying to feed ewes and lambs out is the problem, muck, mismothering etc
Even to have a few weeks grass available at lambing is a huge help, it's no problem to start feeding ewes when lambs are 3 or 4 weeks old if grass runs out. You see lots of posters on facebook saying to leave ewes out for winter they're better off but the sad part is they have every ppick of grass gone from the ewes rearing lambs later
Been there, tried that and back to middle of March again! It cuts a massive amount of work lambing later
Have circa 150 lambs backed up in the sheds at the moment. It's just something you have to accept and deal with in the west.
We moved away from charolais years ago cos of their inability to deal with cold wet conditions.
Hampshire down are probably the best.
Neighbour here in the West who does early lamb is in a similar pickle with an outbreak of pneumonia to top it off:( - I haven't gone the early lamb route for 10 years now and the outlook for the rest of the month reminds me again why I stay clear of it up here in North Mayo
Anyone else struggling with space in your sheds due to the weather.
Have lambs here a week old now and can't get them out with the weather so bloody bad.
Sorry, my mistake, ketofen is the antiinflammatory.
No wonder I don't like advising
Didn't really say tbh.
I just described the situation best I could and that's what he gave me.
She's up and nibbling at some hay there now so fingers crossed she has enough milk to feed the lamb now
Yes Ketovit is similar to the liquid life-aid type products
Ketovit is like Chanatol isn't it Wrangler? It's what I give to any ewe that seems to have any touch of twin lamb disease or goes off their feed. I always have a few bottles to hand this time of year.
Ketovit is the painkiler we use, What did he say was wrong with her
Quick update in case it may help someone else on here in the same situation.
Went to the vet and he gave me a shot of Dex for her along with a shot of Promox LA for today and another for Friday.
Also gave me a bottle of Ketovit to give her for a few days.
Confusing how she developed the mastitis seen as she was literally 'bursting' with milk just 48 hours ago
I don't like prescribing, so do what you think yourself, I'm not a vet.
No he has cleared up today alright.
The udder does seem a bit hot and can feel a lump in it also unfortunately.
Should I just continue with the Dipen (penicillin) for a few days or would I need to get something else from the vet for her now
He should have enough in the other side, is he scouring to day, udder would be hot and hard with mastitis
Just to update - checked her again there now and the milk seems to have dried up on one side so maybe there is a touch of mastitis after all.
It was only yesterday the lamb was slightly scouring from all the milk she had.
