Why are the authorities not taking foreign convicted criminals who have no legal right to live in this country to the airport for deportation instead of asking them to "self-deport"?
I'm surprised we are even going as far as to ask them to self deport.

It's red tape for the most part. We don't exist in a police state with a whole department of heavies whose job it is to track down and deport people.
I haven't watched the video because Gript, but the deportation process in Ireland involves giving the individual the option to leave the country voluntarily before a deportation order is made. This is likely the process that's in place here that they're doing a Helen Lovejoy about. It's not a "disaster waiting to happen", it's just conservative nutjobs wetting themselves over prison and foreigners. A twofer.
From the point of view of the prison service, they have no basis on which to continue to detain the person after they've served their time.

I can well believe there may be 11k orders outstanding, but the vast majority of them would have already left the country and we're just unaware of it. Unless someone is willing to live in a hovel doing cash jobs only and without access to transport, healthcare and basically most of society, then they're going to fvck off somewhere else.
