The problem here is money. Can those new markets really replace the revenue that SA brought to the table? Whatever about NZ, who could be badly impacted, Australia sure as hell can’t afford a loss in revenue.
The thing is if SA want out of the Rugby Championship then they'll leave no matter what NZ think. The Rugby Championship need to get Japan and Fiji in. The new qualification rules should strengthen the likes of Fiji, Samoa and Tonga and make them much more competitive.
I think what this will actually do is strengthen the argument for a world test Championship. I think it's inevitable, it is just a matter of waiting out the outrage and letting people get used to the idea.
Ya I kind of agree, could see them playing both.
I see why your idea isn’t very popular , but if it comes down to money ( and it usually does) I could see them playing both and then playing less games in July or November..
Is there more money to be made playing the 6 nations than playing the autumn and summer internationals?
Why not?
Surely the question is, why?
If SA Union wants them to play both tournaments, and forget about the other tests then sure, why not?
Most of their front-line internationals already play in Europe, and they play in the Rugby Championship, so what's the difference?
Because their players wouldn't have an off season.
You expect SA players to play 5 tests in the 6 nations, 6 tests in the Rugby Championship, 3 home summer tests, 3 November tests, plus URC/Premiership/Top 14 matches and Champions cup matches every season?
Why would South Africa joining the Six Nations mean that they would drop out of the Rugby Championship?
The two tournaments are 6 months apart.
Italian professional rugby completely does if they're turfed out if the competition. The 6 Nations becomes a more interesting competition, but at the expense of one of rugby's stated goals if expanding the game.
It also kills the Rugby Championship as a competition as well. New Zealand will lose their competition and no amount of new additions like Japan or a rejigged Pacific Islands side will change that.
But it'll make CVC money so that's all that matters really.
I've no problem with SA joining, but not at the expense of Italy, or anyone else for that matter.
3 years until 2025.
though not sure how the above news ties in with this from 2020
https://www.espn.com/rugby/story/_/id/30253998/south-africa-commits-springboks-rugby-championship-2030
and this article suggest the World Nations Championship is still a valid idea
https://www.ultimaterugby.com/news/nations-championship-interest-renewed%2C-sa-rugby-commits-to-sanzaar-partnership/643199
i think its safe to say the future of international rugby is a state of immense flux right now
Pretty sure I heard on the radio just yesterday that they committed to the rugby championship for another 4 years
Yeah its not true
I know it’s the daily mail but still some story if true!!
