I said the same in my Whatsapp group. There wasn't as much outrage when Mason Greenwood was arrested. Its ridiculous.
In fairness, there wasn't need for much discussion around Greenwood. Can be summed up in one post. He's a **** scumbag and **** him.
This thread went from "bastard kicked a cat" to "well pigs are treated bad" to "well vegans are dicks" to "it's only a cat" so I think the amount of posts on this thread relative to one about Greenwood is not indicative of the amount of outrage, but more the more diverse the opinions of people regarding the issue.

I agree that cognitive dissonance isn't really at play when people are completely unaware of what animals go through to end up in products they buy, the animal agriculture industries do a very good job of hiding this and this is therefore more just simple ignorance and lack of awareness. When the reality is pointed out and people don't react the same way to the same or worse treatment of an animal, simply because the species is different, when each species shares the same ability to feel pain and suffer, this is cognitive dissonance and by buying products of animal origin, we are contributing to the exploitation of these animals so it's important to create awareness around these issues as most people do not feel comfortable when they realise they are paying for this exploitation, especially when it's unnecessary.
Well to be fair, it probably would've been just a page and half or thereabouts except for the tedious holier than thou "if-you-dont eat-plant-sausages-then-you-can't-comment-because you're-just-as-bad-as-some-footballer-kicking-a-cat-for-kicks" wtte.

I do think there are certain animal lovers who are incapable of showing any empathy towards humans. And any activists I have heard talk about this issue seem to be cut from that cloth.
