Had a fr heifer calf born this morning in cubicle shed. Cow due 15th January. I served a few in early April as I was penalised for not supplying enough milk last January. A sexed mo salah calf. All good. Best of luck for calving 2022
The few times here where cow womt let me teats too big, I stick with getting calf to suck . Have used kick start to get the sucking notion on the calf, and tied cow force calf to tackle her.
The kick start seems to drive them mad to drink

Nope. The two still sucking the cows necks. Feeding them 2 litres once a day. They Probably could do with more but want to have them hungry too so they might go looking for the cow.
Are they sucking OK from bottle and teat, without flinching. We had a calf that had a cut under its tongue, injured while being jacked. We had the Vet out twice - before the injury under its tongue was discovered.
Had a heifer calving last night, just head coming. Got the 2 legs, pulled it out, small and dead. Cleanings came out with it. Never saw that before
Detached so probably reason calf died in first place?
Two blues overnight, had to give a hand both times big calves but cows had room. Maybe a bit of subclinical milk fever perhaps, i dunno

I use the bolus from ahv for the autumn calvers that I think might get milk fever, great job
Just in after a lovely nighttime calving. Cow calved fine but the calf slid under a gate to next pen. He hadn’t sucked so milked her and fed the calf. All happy but no denying the work with sucklers. And the cow was fairly wicked too……
If you have a dry patch outside near the yard would it be easier to calve them outside?
Did you ever try feeding the heavily in calf ones only in the evening to promote daytime calving?
If I was to give the road to every cross suckler I wouldn’t have many left!!!!
I have a new suckler shed put up a couple of years ago so I have it pretty safe so I can manage these ones. They usually calm down after a couple of days.
Wouldn’t have any dry bit. As per the post above I have a new suckler shed so it’s no real issue calving them inside. Land is very wet here so not an option to have anything out.
That's all OK until you get a psychotic cow in a field with a calf bed out or something like that and now you need to get her in and she gone haywire.

Often found if the calf was alive the cow got up quicker
Well I just had the maddest cow ever calf this evening. She was never this bad before. Not safe having her around. She’ll settle after a few days but she’ll never see the bull again.
Must have been a day for it, we put loopy tits in a secure pen this morning. Left her alone , calf born this evening. Will go with the cows tomorrow
Not worth the hassle.
Docility makes a big difference. I can milk a lot of the dairy cross sucklers in a chute without any kicking or tying.
You will be well shot of her. You will have a nice quiet replacement in for her.
Definitely not worth the hassle. She’ll rear her calf and then it’s factory for her. Good cow but that’s no good when that wicked.
No disrespect meant, I hope you remember that when she comes in heat, we can all get amnesia
She got up after an hour. I wasn’t overly worried. She went down awful easy
all cows generally quieten when calf gets to a week old or so and I have none that are so bad that I couldn’t go out in a field with.
she’ll be let out with the bullocks and only let back with the rest of the cows after bull is taken away.
Had a cow years ago, she was very protective of her 4th calf (quiet till then) and quietened after a week or so, super calf & we AI’d again, same when she calved only this time I remembered the danger rather than calf quality and she got gate

the last one, the cow hadn’t really sprung and when I walked into shed wouldn’t settle after so I had to put her in crush, calf came with light pull. All in good form.
