Yes I get it now. Ukraine are a threat to Russia. Ukraine who aren't even in NATO and had a piece of Ukraine invaded in 2014 and militant separatists working for the Kremlin undermining them in their own country, and cyber attacks on government website. Little Ukraine is a big threat to Russia. Little Ukraine who wish to join the west and EU (for all its faults) and democracy. Why would they want to move away from Russia, like I know it is essentially a backwards dictatorship with terrible human rights, where political opposition are either murdered or jailed, media is controlled by the Kremlin and all wealth and power is confined to a group of oligarchs loyal to Putin. But why? Why are they those terrible bullies Ukraine arming their citizens and setting up defense systems on their borders? I know Russia has mobilized the largest concentration of military force in Europe since WW2,...and I know their military and weaponry dwarfs Ukraine and they even have nuclear weapons but why are Ukraine being so aggressive for. It must be Americas fault again because they did that thing in Iraq, ah yes!

An alleged en-passant comment behind closed doors to the leader of a country that does not exist anymore prior to the greatest geopolitical shake-up of the 20th century does not meet the bar of a treaty, joint-communique, or anything else convincing. I have next to no sympathy for the point of view that an individual's comment - which to this day we've seen very little evidence apart from in the minds of Russian nationalists - without the consultation of other NATO allies should be taken as bond as a treaty would.
