Was up in the parents at the weekend and decided to give God of War Ascension a go as I'd not tried it. Jesus the performance is chronic, even from a supposed tech showcase. Unlocked framerate that jumps wildly from 15 fps to 45 fps. It's horrendous. I was shocked that we put up with it at the time. I even checked digital foundry and despite picking up on the performance it was full of praise for the game.
I tried GoW and I thought it was a load of button mashing combat, so I got bored very quickly. Is it really a goat candidate?
Yep. Forgot what fun was.
AC Shenanigans. I think these are the equivalent of click bait. The longer you play the better data ubisoft can show investors. AC Odyssey had a lot of heart, but I'm sure they had to drag it out for this reason.
Death's Door has me hooked.
The old ones, nope. I mean they are fun for what they are but when you put them up against the likes of Ninja Gaiden Black, Revengeance, Devil May Cry and Bayonetta it's a bit simplistic.
As for the new one. It's a very good game that's a little too long and suffers from the worst case of palette swapped enemies and bosses since the 16 bit era but it's definitely worth a play. I actually picked it up yesterday on PC so I can enjoy it at 60 FPS. Is it a GOAT contender? Not a hope.
If you didn't get on with it it doesn't really change much as you get further into it. There's a little bit more than button mashing to it but it ain't Platinum games level deep either.
I think people really liked the story, which is the main attraction for them. A good story isn't enough for me though.
I actually somewhat agree with your views on the role of story in games, but I do think it depends on the type of game.
Is GoW not 60fps on PS5?
Yep

Said like I can buy a ps5 easily or there's enough reasons to get one yet.
Finished Control this evening. Good game if a little weird at first. I loved when you got teleported to the motel.
It's probably one of my favourite games of the past few years.
And on the flip side and opposite opinion, yes, God of War 2018 was GOTY, hands down, no contender. It was a masterpiece of evolved (from the original games) storytelling with amazing graphics, meaty gameplay and fleshed out characters, including Daddy K himself. I hate kids in games, they usually ruin the fun, but Atreus was not only not annoying (for the most part), he's useful, another tool or weapon for Kratos to kick some Norse butt.
But it's all down to personal preference. Rather than straight up say a game is not good because I don't like it, I can only say that GoW ticked every single box in my mental list of "ERMAGHERD THIS IS AMAZING". If you're looking for Souls type games, then no, it's not for you. If you tried it and didn't like it, then it mustn't be for you either. But to not call it GOTY material, when it is, as voted on by many different places, just because it's not a style of game you like. Nah. For every article you will read saying it didn't deserve it, you'll find another saying it did. The people can't vote correctly, unless they vote for Soulslike games apparantly.
It is what it is. There were some amazing games out in 2018, Dead Cells, Astrobot: Rescue Mission, the very high on the list Subnautica, Hollow Knight, AC Odyssey, Spiderman. Others would put Return of Obra Dinn and other games I've no interest in high on that list. But God of War was the pinnacle of gaming that year, not just for me, but for quite a lot of people. I think Polygons 50 of the year article has the best closing quote to tell you about God of War, it wasn't perfect, but it was perfect at the time and on initial playing. It shows that what we want in games evolves quickly, and is very diverse:
God of War feels like a game we’ll remember as a distinctly 2018 product: a glossy testament to the astonishing artistry and craft of games at this moment, and a reminder of how much room the medium still has to grow.
G. O. A. T.
We didn't say G. O. T. Y.
Like The Last of Us and Uncharted, GoW is yet another Playstation "movie game", and I generally have zero interest in playing these things.
Mypologies! Points stand though. I do think it's up there as one of the GOAT. For me, it's up there with Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1 & 2, recently added Ori games, Dust: An Elysian Tale, and I've no doubt a future Subnautica could be up there too, if they do it right. And I don't think any single game can be GOAT, as again it's all relative and personal.
Ashtray Maze was excellent.
Said like Dark Souls doesn't exist 😝
To me it doesn't. Not my cup of tea, but I appreciate other people find joy in it. There are men out there who find joy in women kicking them hard into the balls, so to each their own.
Thinking about it if you like Resi 4 it might be worth giving it another shot. For me it's closest to that, like a Melee focused Resi 4 but not as good (but then again there's not much that is).
It is definitely a playstation 'movie game' but there's more nuance to the gameplay that elevates it well above all the other Sony 'movie games'.
There we have it. While every other game is 'Dark Souls of', Dark souls is the domestic violence of games.
Anyway I jest. Dark Souls isn't the GOAT because it's not Super Metroid.
I played it on PlayStation Plus and I cancelled the contract, so I don't know if I'd buy it. I'm just not into games like that. If there is a story, I like there to be a bit of player agency, so that your decisions influence the story at least.
God of War arguably gets better in the postgame. There’s a significant amount of side stuff and exploration to do and that’s where some of the real challenge of the game is.
Also I could listen to Mimir telling Atreus the stories of the gods all day!
GOW is probably my second favourite game on PS4 after Bloodborne.
Great visuals, decent combat if lacking a bit of weight, good interaction between characters, lovely soundtrack and enjoyable story.
I did find the bosses let it down somewhat though. Lots of very similar ones which got a bit boring (looking at you big trolls).
This is the most 2005 looking and sounding gaming since 2005. Just straight up late PS2 / budget 360 game vibes. Haven’t heard voice acting that bad in agggesss.
Stilted dialogue and acting. Check
Teenage edgelord drama. Check
Over use of bloom. Check
Piss filter. Check
Limp Bizkit. Check
Architecture consisting entirely of chest high walls... Remains to be seen.
Still kind of curious about it because no matter how dumb this look Team Ninja know how to make an action game.
And Super Metroid isn't the GOAT because it's not Super Mario Bros. 3. Case closed. 😉
Much like Star Wars, FF is being slowly bled to death with overly shite spinoffs
I don't agree with you but also can't argue with you and your enlightened choice.
