Dalkey even has a EuroSpar as well. But I don't see people complaining about that either.
Hopefully its not fast food and if you want eddie rockets there are plenty close by, whatever goes in there they need to protect the main street, how paddy power ever got permission for their gaudy livery is beyond me, its something the english protect very well in certain locations, we should follow suit.
Ironically what dalkey could do with is a large eat in coffee shop, most of the coffee shops are takeaway or very small, nothing particularly family friendly.
Cafe Nero tried opening in Dalkey a few years back and the objections, especially those from the owner of a certain health food store/oil supplier, we’re somewhere between hysterical/comical and xenophobic.
i dont love Cafe Nero but i would wager one would do quite well. Something like a mini dunnes, or Avoca or similar would also go well.
For some reason i thought Barnhill stores were going to put a cafe upstairs, must have imagined that.
Perhaps a "Matt Damon exhibition including his much photographed plastic bag and a half eaten Pecan.
Boojum has 17 restaurants across the island of Ireland while Zaytoon are only 4 strong. Not exactly multinationals the world over by any means. Yes, there are 5 Boojum branches in Belfast which is technically the UK. However, it isn't exactly overseas. Even by typing this, I cannot believe I am pandering to the xenophobic nonsense.
As @josip rightly pointed out, Dalkey is hardly devoid of chains. It's got a Circle K at the entrance which is as multination as it gets which I do NOT have a problem with. The hatred which Dalkey has for chains is rooted in champagne socialism in spite of the fact that the bulk of the wealth in Dalkey is the result capitalism. I have zero problem with people running a business (be it local or international) in a hamlet, village or town as long it brings jobs to that locality. In my opinion, use of the cliched term "heritage town" to object to chains is a form of obscurantism.
None of those would add to the village. They are generic and found in most towns in Ireland. It’s nice that Dalkey offers a choice in the sane way Monkstown does.
nothing worse than going away and finding the exact same shoe and restaurants as every where else you’ve been.
don’t get me wrong I do like a good zaytoon at 4:30 in the morning after leaving temple bar. I would not be upset if it replaced Borza which had gone to 5hit since they done it up. Feels dirty and grubby. Chippers need to show the food being made.
Jesus, chill out. I was only pointing out that Starbucks and other coffee chains were proactively and vigorously ignored by the local community on the basis that they were chains that threatened "local" businesses. This is a fact. Take it up with the Dalkey Village community group, I don't live there so it means jack all to me. Most prospective retailers will look back at that history and likely run a mile.
I never said anything about petrol stations or supermarkets and the reference to them is irrelevant because nearly every petrol station or supermarket in urban Ireland is a chain or a franchise.
My issue with Borza is the few times i have been down for a few pints and looking forward to a bag of chips afterwards its closed, they seem to keep whatever hours suit them to be honest.
Borzas has been desperate for a good few years now. The current owners must have plenty of money. I've never known a chipper to ignore custom like it. And it's been a disappointment any time it has been open.
After a bit of speculation on whether Pennys would proceed to take 2 floors of the old house of Fraser (the other two are already under construction to create a Brown Thomas) seems its still going ahead.
Leaves two big shops (the existing Pennys and BT2 to fill, guess they could refigure them).
Diep in Dundrum is closed down, so is Paddy Power
Oh dear. After the good news regarding Penneys with the announcements of more commercial partnerships in Dundrum TC yesterday. This news on Diep & Paddy Power is disappointing. Was Covid the main reason that those businesses closed their doors today?
I don't think it's ever bad news when a Paddy Power closes down. I expect the staff are just shunted elsewhere in the chain.
My theory, young people's disposal income is impacted badly.
If they are stuck renting, less wonga for buying of takeaways.
Donnybrook Fair will be gone too. Footfall has dropped big time.
No loss with PP closing. No need for a shop for gambling anymore anyway.
Diep is a Celtic Tiger relic and has been "old" generic thai type food for a decade now. Not sure they've ever changed the menu.
IV vitamin drips, sustainable fashion and ‘gentle futurism’ – inside the new €10m Brown Thomas shop
Didn't realise Brown Thomas was opening as quickly as next month in Dundrum. I thought it was still some way off.
The Donnybrook Fair in Dundrum TC that they've just invested millions in?
and owned by the Musgrave group that also owns Supervalu, Centra, musgraves cash and carry and has turnover of 5.4 BILLION and profits of 100 million a year
I suspect we'll see DF survive and thrive. Its already my mum's favourite place to shop.
Some of my fam went to DTC today and it was black. Like a Christmas eve of old.
Yes, that could be a reaction to the day that's in it or more hopefully a symbol of pent up demand and optimism.
Ditto the City Centre today, which I saw with my own eyes, mobbed.
The old Weatherspoons in Blackrock has been sold to the Leinster Rugbyads who have a minority shareholding in Lemon & Duke and The Bridge.

Is that closed as of now?
Yep closed at the moment.
Hotel/Hospital related so not as exciting as the usual ones.
Beacon Hospital has secured the green light for an €75 million eight storey extension. The scheme also includes new A&E facilities, cancer care facilities and associated in-patient treatment rooms.
The planning application involves the substantive demolition of the eight storey Beacon Hotel which the Beacon Hospital purchased late in 2020.
Pretty exciting of you're in need of treatment. I know it's a private hospital, but treatment is often purchased by the public system, would be nice to speed up some treatment that people have been waiting ages for.
Fallon & Byrne in People's Park in DL closed for next few weeks due to staff shortage & refurbishment works
Hopefully turning it back into restaurant. Lovely room, absolutely wasted with the makeshift shop they've had there during Covid.
probably now that you mention it, it has been laid out as a shop for so long i had forgotten about the restaurant!
So, supermarkets and petrol stations are irrelevant to the topic of chains while restaurants and cafes are. You said "Dalkey hates chains" and I merely listed the ones that are there across all lines of business as no line of business is exempt. Making exceptions is an insideous practice.
Anyway, I'm chill. I noticed that Walters in Dun Laoghaire is now open again as Walters in spite of the fact that the working title was The Swimmer. I want to check it out at soon. Has anyone here been since it re-opened?
Not a new shop but spotted on the Facebook page of Supervalu in Dalkey...
