Here's to a fun, hassle-free and completely uncontroversial tournament... 😬
Women's draw
Men's draw
I think Zverev has a great chance here, Medvedev isn’t used to being the favourite and it will be interesting to see how he copes with it. I can’t ignore the assault allegations when it comes to Zverev though so hope someone else wins. I don’t think Nadal’s body is up to the rigours of two weeks and best of five anymore.
Badosa looking good on the women’s side but she had a few long matches in Sydney and the winners of the build up tournaments rarely win the slam itself. I don’t think it would be good for the game if Osaka won straight after taking a six month break but in the women’s game anything is possible.
I need some advice on choosing a different horse in this race.
Can't go for Nadal (total GSs), can't go for Medvedev, try to fend him off the #1 spot for as long as possible.
I'm thinking I'll support Zverev.
Zverev and Medvedev favourites to make the final now, but, both have suffered more than their fair share of shock defeat in slams before, although they have definitely been more consistent over the last year to 18 months. Winning the USO should stand to Medvedev and think he is deserving favourite. I think quarter finals or semi finals at a push is the limit for Nadal.
It's anybody's guess on the women's side, think Raducanu will make a first round exit and Barty will again fail at her home slam.
First match up on RLA is Maria vs Sakkari. In the 2018 Aus. Open, it was Maria vs Sharapova in the first round, Someone is trolling us ...
BOTH Medvedev AND Zverev can overtake him with the AO win as Zverev is not defending many points so can gain a lot
I'm supporting Alcaraz. He's not going to win but like his tennis
Doesn't seem to have played since the Next-Gen Finals so no idea what he's in form. Hopefully his serve is better.
Also supporting Karatsev. He's just a solid player - not overly flashy but accurate.
Cressy is interesting to look at as he's a real-old school serve-volleyer - literally every point. He won't go far but a nice novelty
Did get to the 250 final vs Nadal
French-born, did full college system in the US, now represents the US
Big improvement this last year
Big win for Wang over Gauff, Wang hadn’t played since the Olympics but having previously beaten Serena here she does have pedigree. Interestingly her coach Pat Cash is a vocal opponent of the Covid vaccinations but yet there is very little coverage of his stance.
Keyes won a tight two setter against Kenin, Kenin now drops to 91 in the rankings, it’s been a tough two years for her since she won here. Appendicitis, Covid, dropping her father as her coach and then reuniting with him, it’s been a bit of a mess.
Good win for Korda over Norrie.
I'd say Kennin is still wondering how she lost it. Only one break in it I think, and she played pretty well, moving Keys around the court. Keys was serving like a dream, though. Great placement and power.
Zverev under a bit of pressure here, but Altmaier just couldn't hold on to serve.
(I've think it's live, apologies if it's not and that's old news!)
Are all the matches being played indoors or under closed roofs? This one and the one I caught late last night sounded indoors....
And who's the Aussie commentating on the Zverev match? His voice sounds really familiar but I just cannot place it!
Zverev was indoors, but roof was open a good bit, it was pretty breezy!
Stupid question time.
How the feck does the umpire get up into and down off their perch on whatever court Zverev/Altmaier were on?
I saw an umpire on another court, and there was the usual ladder down the front, but this one looked like a big pod perched atop a pillar!
That is interesting about Pat Cash and with him being Australian, can’t believe it hasn’t got more coverage. Pity he didn’t speak up for Djoc.
Aha! Very snazzy indeed!!
That was a thumping game between Osama and Osorio!
"First they came for the tennis players, and I did not speak out..." 🙂
The Telegraph also has a piece saying John McEnroe said on Eurosport that he couldn’t believe what happened Djokovic.
This final set looked to be going Andy Murray’s way at 4-1 but basilashvilli has brought it back to 4-3.
5-4 Murray final set. I’m not sure why the crowd seem to be booing Murray or booing in general.
And still booing him during interview - hard to believe, not sure I ever heard that before!
Yeah. Didn’t hear what was said fully but the interviewer did say that regardless of what was said they are happy to see him back.
Nice to see Murray getting through.
Dan Evans also through in straight sets
Wasn't booing by the looks of it.
Heather Watson won her match in three sets. Emma radacanu is playing later today,
Now doing the same thing in the kyrgios match. Almost as annoying as vuvuzelas!
Well you learn something new every day - thanks for that - Kyrgios playing up to the crowd on the siuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu - actually quite a humourous match!
He is nothing if not an entertainer!
I didn't understand it myself tbh.
Nice to see Kyrgios getting a win at his home tournament. It would be great if he got to the 2nd week.
[Edit], just saw that he's got Medvedev next, so much for the 2nd week.
When he is in the mood! Seriously entertaining and unpredictable
Raducanu - Stephens coming up. This match is entirely on Sloane's racquet and the result depends largely on what version of her shows up. She got married recently so not sure how much training she's actually been doing. Regardless, Raducanu will get destroyed on social media if she doesn't win 60 61 or something 🙄
Well she's off to a very positive start anyway - 3-0 up, one break!
Anyone know what the umpire was telling her before the toss that she couldn't wear, and she was adamant she could?
