Could see the early signs of Ryan McMenamin impact with lots of bodies behind the ball. It won't be pretty to watch but if it gets Cavan out of Division 4 it will do.
Though shouldn't be relying on a Defensive coach in Division 4
I would have thought it was reflective of the conditions. No point going full press against the wind to have a wind-assisted kick take 10 players out of the game. When we had the wind we went man for man and to me that showed a bit of tactical nous to adapt to the conditions rather than rigidly look to play one way and get hammered.
Just listened to Mickey Graham's interview on the We Are Cavan podcast and that jumped out at me. He was "it's all about getting the lads ready for Leitrim". There is no way he's taking the league for granted this year.
As you said, there is still the above and others (Moynagh and I assume Timoney- also wonder if Niall and Stephen Murray are still in or recovering- both were just coming back into the Gaels team for the senior semi final against Ramor) in the panel to get game time on Tuesday. Nice to see Caoimhín back and Fionntán O’Reilly making his debut.
What else could he say in fairness..He knows he has to perform in the League, after 3 Relegations. The pressure will be on, so there can be no complaceny.
Won't be big bumper attendances for the County board like when Cavan were playing Dublin or Kerry.
I know paddy Meade is out for the year injured unfortunately, but we forgot about Cian reilly he got a starting place last year he’s a good young lad should be a year stronger, hopefully he will be back next week also, so we have Connor brady, Faulkner, Martin reilly, Moynagh, Connor smith, Cian reilly, Oisin Pierson, Niall Murray, stephen Murray, stephen smith cormac timoney, hopefully some of them will be back next week, I don’t know when the holla will be back hopefully soon.
Pierson was carrying a shoulder injury through the championship that required surgery. He was putting that off so he could play with Gowna so no idea if he has had it yet but assume that rules him out of the county panel for the immediate future.
I forgot about that all right cheers
County board don't get the gate from league games.
The last line. I have been watching Gerry Smith come through the intercounty ranks with my own clubman Dara McVeety over the years and would say the two have the same athletic stature in that they are naturally fit.
Smith looked to have bulked up but, whilst he played through injury, he played well enough with Lavey in the senior championship to get a mention on We Are Cavan for their team of the year so he can’t have lost that much conditioning since October when Lavey were knocked out.
Were you at the game or commenting on the stream?
He ripped the hamstring from the bone in the county final which also required surgery. He's had the 2 surgeries done now. How long recovery will be I don't know but I'd imagine it will be substantial.
Yes the league will have to be taken seriously this year. I feel we have to get out of division four or go on a serious run on the Championship for Mickey to keep his job.
What do ye think is acceptable aims for this year ?
We have to get out of division four. I think no less than winning it will suffice to be fair.
As for the championship, reach an Ulster Final or win the Tailteann cup has to be the aim.
Less than that and Mickey has to go.
We definitely have to get out of division 4 and hopefully win it.
Where does this money go and how do CBs make their money? And what about bundles and options like club Breffni? I would have imagined the league is a substantial earner for them.
I think we should be aiming to win the league by scoring an average of 2-30 per game and limiting the opposition to less than 5 scores per game. Then we should be aiming to win Ulster by a cricket score and at least an All Ireland final. Anything else is unacceptable....
That's a hammer blow for him. In the replay, he was taking the fight to Ramor and when he went off injured that was the end of Gowna. It did look like a bad injury but not that bad. Fingers crossed for him and his recovery. As noted above, he has bags of talent.
It goes into a central pot and is then distributed to the county's/clubs.
I had heard before that the league could be surprisingly profitable if a county did well in it. I'm not sure if I read it or heard it somewhere but I have the idea for a good while that the amount of money a county gets from the league depends on - I definitely saw something about there being bonuses for winning a league final and I'm nearly certain that the higher up you finish the more money you get [being in Division 1 is more profitable than Division 4] and how many tickets a county sell for their home games.
These are the figures in the Cavan A/cs Under Income from National Football League each year.
2020 €30,041 - Finished 7th in Division 2 [3 home games]
2019 €99,983 - Finished 8th in Division 1 [3 home games]
2018 €76,692 - Finished 2nd in Division 2 [4 home games]
2017 €111,176 - Finished 7th in Division 1 [3 home games]
2016 €65,546 - Finished 2nd in Division 2 [4 home games]
2015 €37,170 - Finished 5th in Division 2 [3 home games]
COVID was a massive factor in 2020 - even though most of the league was completed, the GAA's overall income was well down compared to normal years so that would have had a big impact.
Clearly the higher up the table you finish the better.

Surely tonight is as good as any to try and get one over on Tyrone?
Last time was in the Gerry Smith “lean years” 😂 in 2017 when he scored a goal on his debut and we beat them in McGlennan’s first game.
The following year, like a lot of the panel, he wouldn’t even play for Mattie!
They’re only back two days from their holiday, four of their first team starting. If we don’t beat them tonight we never will.
Was Conor Madden’s first touch after 23 minutes? We’ve scored 1-9 and I’m still disappointed by the full forward line. Cormac O’Reilly about the best of the three.
What's the score, please
So we've just beaten the reigning All Ireland champions, so that makes us the best team in Ireland now I suppose 😁
Finished 1-17 to 5 points. I never thought I would say ANY game against Tyrone was played at the pace of a friendly, but that more or less was. Notwithstanding them being way off the pace, good intensity from Cavan. Some lovely scores from Patrick Lynch and he showed well for the ball and was unlucky with at least 2 other efforts. Oisin Brady was impressive in the first half as was Cormac O Reilly. Chris Conroy is ideal at centre half back at this time of year.
Regardless of the scoreline (and assuming we didn't pick up any knocks) it was great to see Moynagh and Niall Murray make returns so the panel is looking way stronger than last year. Oisin Kiernan looked to have his mojo back and Gerry Smith looked full of energy. All pointing to being ready for Leitrim. Which is all we can ask for.
Beating the All Ireland champions by 15 points, there’s no point having the championship this year, they should just give Sam to us now, it’s inevitable.
Whilst there is absolutely no sense in running Ulster this year (they might as well hand over the Anglo Celt cup this weekend), I would like us to be gracious and give the likes of Dublin or Kerry a day out in Croker later in the year.
McVetty back in April supposedly any word up your way?
Never heard anything on him returning last year other than Graham saying in January he was unlikely to return.
From what I hear there are no plans for him to come home. I’m not sure he would even bother with county if he did.
I have given up on seeing Dara in a Cavan jersey again and I would suggest others do too unfortunately. He’s gone since 2020 so this will be his third year away from the panel. He keeps in good shape but still wouldn’t have the necessary ball practice and conditioning for a while.
