Proper justice in the US.
Here he'd get community service.
You may have googled the place, but did you look up a map?
"Her Majesty's United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland." Note how they have a specific delineation between Britain and Northern Ireland, which is geographically correct. If you're from Great Britain, you're likely British (Whether someone from Bretagne is also British is arguable, but not relevant here). If you're from Northern Ireland, by inherent definition, one would seem to be Irish.
What passport does he have?
Yeah driving after one or two drinks is socially acceptable and normal, most people would still be below the limit at that level. but actual drunk driving is still frowned upon
The meaning of words don't always fully stack up to their origins. The term "British" is currently used for citizens, or indeed subjects, of the entire United Kingdom. There's no such word as "United Kingdomites" or anything like that. British is the word that's regularly used, regardless of whether they're actually from the "Great Britain" bit. It's there in dictionary definitions, common usage and legal documents. This is just a plain fact, and any amount of pedantic wordplay as to the origin of the word doesn't change it. Language changes and adapts.
Someone from Northern Ireland may instead identify as Irish. Or Northern Irish, or an Ulsterman. And that's fine, and in the case of Irish, even legally recognised. But to deny that some - nae many - people from Northern Ireland are British is to deny reality.
When I lived in the USA, my scuba buddy served 17 years. Very scary stories he told me.
So did your mate join a gang and do their every bidding, or did he get passed around as a sex toy for 17 years? They seem to be the only two options according to his experience as related here by you.
Donegal drivers are a disaster. I don't think that's really up for debate. The driving culture is apalling.
The better question would be what passport was he in America on.
Many from the north would travel over on the Irish one, overstay, come home at some stage and then decided to get a British one to head back on as to avoid any queries by border patrol.
I accept that is true in common conversation, but since Sam is attempting to split hairs on the matter, I've been happy to indulge. In this context, being British under common conversation is not dispositive of also being Irish. After all, he is from the island of Ireland which is also a common conversation definition of being 'Irish', and presuming he was also born in the area, he would also be an Irish citizen by birth given he is over 17.
So, both legally, he can be Irish and British, in common conversation he can be Irish and British, but geographically, he can only be Irish. Which definition was the Irish Independent using in the linked OP article?
The US are wise to that. You have your thumbprints scanned on entry to America. Anyone thinking they'd get one over on Yank border control by switching passports would be a prize wally.
That’s like saying that a Canadian and an Argentinian can only be “American”. It may be geographically correct on some level, but it renders the definition of the word so vague as to be useless without much contextual clarification. As and it’s certainly not exclusively correct, as there are other geographic designations for that person that are also correct (and more precise).
Saying that someone from NI can “geographically (…) only be Irish” is still incorrect. The geographic location of him on the Island of Ireland does not preclude him from being British, even in a geographic sense, since the concept of “the British Isles”, which includes the island of Ireland - or at the very least the “British” north east part of it, is commonly accepted in The United Kingdom and indeed many other parts of the world.
As for the Indo’s reasoning, who knows.
Hopefully they throw the book at him. Scumbag.
Ah yeah, in fairness it's a long time since I did it :)
Apparently he became a yard captain.
Covered in white power tattoos.
He had to stab a child molester, or get kicked out and be left to fend for himself.
Originally sentenced to 7 years, ended up serving 17.
tbh idk where this idea he’s gonna suffer terrible in prison is coming from anyway
he’s a minor offender (it’s drunk driving he didn’t shoot someone here) and will likely be in a low-medium security prison— but may even serve the sentence in a county jail. That’s unlikely especially if it’s a fairly long one though. But long and short is prison will absolutely suck for him cos it’s supposed to and there’s no TVs in the room unlike here..
but really he’s unlikely to be in much hardship and certainly nothing like some have described here. These types of criminals are rarely in the same prison as a minor offender (you’re talking gang members, murderers etc) would be in high security facilities. Medium at the very least.
He’s gonna loose his freedoms in more ways than one, have his cell turned upside down at the leisure of the guards & might if he’s there long enough and a bit of a mouthy chap get a few slaps his way, but otherwise thinking he’ll suffer much beyond that is fantasising.
now sure enough he might well go to prison, be a real pain in the bollocks & do stupid things like sell drugs or whatever or even choose to be in a gang and do these things, that’s a different matter and of his own choice. I’m just saying these things don’t happen as a rule.
first degree felonies are not minor charges.
Hopefully they throw a speeding car at him
Any actual hard evidence for that. Anecdotal doesn't count.
I have witnessed plenty of bad driving all over the country.
Plenty of hard evidence in the graveyards of Donegal. If you prefer statistics, despite being the 13th biggest administratrive county by population, it was number 3 in the number of road deaths in 2020. I'm sure if you do a breakdown over the last decade you will find it punches well above its weight in terms of idiotic accidents caused by morons.
Like the rest of us born on the island of Ireland part of the British Isles, by geography he can be British or Irish.
By identity he can be what he wants.
I was reading this thread yesterday and today a bit, and hadn't realised the reason the scumbag left for America to begin with..
He had no licence and should not have been in the US as his visiting visa had expired the previous week.
Brolly fled to the US at the end of 2019 while awaiting sentence for another drunk driving incident near Dungiven when he led police on a 114mph chase...
....
.....
...Brolly’s reckless behaviour mirrors his actions in Northern Ireland prior to fleeing to the US.
He had been due to be sentenced at Coleraine Magistrates Court for drunk driving in October 2019, but failed to show as he was on the other side of the Atlantic.
On this occasion a drunken Brolly led cops on a 114mph chase around the Co Londonderry countryside lasting 16 miles.
He was only caught when police deployed a stinger device across the road.
After pleading guilty to dangerous driving and drunk driving in September 2019, District Judge Peter King told him: “You are clearly a menace to road users”.
His words would prove prophetic because within 18 months Brolly would cause catastrophic injuries to four teenagers in a drunken smash in the US.
You have to wonder about his background.
How did he manage to get into the USA even on a holiday visa? They’re so strict even with honest bona fide tourists. How did he slip through? Surely his paperwork would have flagged this?
I am guessing this guy is related.. But I could be wrong.
he was convicted but not sentenced so there might not be a record yet of the conviction. plus he could have just lied on his visa application.
Missed that before. Scumbag and a coward. Two delightful traits.
Only for the girls were in a decent sized modern SUV (Mazda CX5) they’d have been toast. He was driving a big American style pick up
We are probably supposed to see if he has any mental health issues, then send a bill for the treatment to the victim’s family and the taxpayers can then buy him a new car…. Cause that’s how things seem to work these days. At least in this country.
When are the sentencing the little weasel anyhow?
😂
