Where are they being flipped for double? I took a look at the Celtic auction that finished yesterday, and the top price paid was €300.
If IDL doubled the price, surely that would put people off? It's already overpriced for what it is, according to a lot of people.
Any idea what this is worth?
Now that it's open, nothing.
Priceless - so not only of value to the proud owner.
An actually opened bottle that someone is drinking? I thought those days were over!
IDL should see if they get away with putting coloured water in the '22 bottles as I suspect none will ever be opened.
Midleton Very Rare 2022 Waiting List Now Open! MVR22 (baggotstreetwines.com)
not double but alot more than the 200 for the 2021
FFS ... I'll get mine from the distillery for RRP.
Might just pay the €8 shipping
how will you get from there? waiting list ?
I don't think MVR is that hard to get if you just keep your ear to the ground. I imagine Baggot St. Wines are just trying to make more of a profit based on them knowing a lot of people intend to just sell it on.
My uncle shared it with me recently. He's retired now but worked in the drinks industry and used to pick up all sorts of stuff. He was telling me he got a free bottle of Midleton most years in the 80s and 90s. I remember as a kid he had a fancy decanter filled with brown liquid. Turns out he was emptying the midleton and whatever else he was getting into it. Don't think he is too bothered but I dread to think how much it would be worth now.
I'm sure he enjoyed it at the time; though. More than the promise of some cash in 30 years time!
They're a shower for whiskey prices. They had MVR18 in there for over 1300. I got mine in CWS for 130. Scandalous carry-on.
Corporate customers lap that up. It's not for mere mortals at those prices.
Where's the review?
Some would notice alright.
You reminded me I have samples of Midleton 2014-2019 on the shelf. I'll have to add them to my busy schedule 😝
Sorry, I blurted that out without any research (obviously). I'm just so used to seeing silly prices posted.
I suppose what I'm saying is that if a product has limited supply and sells out rapidly, then is quickly and routinely resold at a higher value - that indicates to me that the product is underpriced (no matter what the product is). Perhaps, not by half, but certainly underpriced.
But I guess IDL see value in the bi annual excitement of sourcing a bottle and all the rumour of and actual scsrceness. It's also possible, thoygh, that a price increase would make it even more desirable.
Either way, IDL have played a blinder with Middleton VR over the last few years. I suppose they won't want to change much.
Still hoping to swap a 219 for a 2020 guys. Will even put a sweetener with it.
So is there an observable downturn in MVR prices on the secondary market, or is it on the way if not wholly materialised yet? (Noting the comments made above about a recent auction)
Anecdotally it does seem like there are more people buying for the purpose of selling on, whether in the short or the medium term. That should mean that there is more supply in the secondary market for those looking to buy to collect / drink, I would have thought.
Or are there other factors - I don't know what overall supply is compared to the past, for example - curtailing this?
Personally I think the last couple of auctions have seen a glut of recent year releases and this is people flipping them for a quick profit. But the numbers of older releases seems to be consistent over the past few months.
For example, and using the Celtic Whiskey Shop's monthly auction as a guide, at the large November Auction, 23 of the 52 bottles of MVR were from 2019 or later (44%). In December 11 of the 29 were 2019+ (38%).
I heard at work yesterday that the 22 batch has been sent to be bottled already.
Anyone know roughly how long would it take to be available in shops once bottling starts?
I don't think it's a set time from bottling until shops. They'll decide when the time is right.
I've been offering 2x 2019's for 1x 2020 and I'd go as high as 3x 2019's for 1x 2020 but so far no one interested :(
The auctions are flooded with them. People whipping them up thinking they'd retire on the profits
Dont know if anybody ever mentioned this auction site before Irish Whiskey Auction - Catawiki
They often have MVR up for auction, currently six bottles in an auction that ends Friday.
Midleton Very Rare 2014 - 700ml - Catawiki at the moment €770 for 2014 bottle and likely to increase before Friday.
Further to my previous analysis of the recent Celtic Whiskey Auctions, there are 21 bottles of MVR up on the January sale. 10 of the 21 (48%) are from 2019 or later.
Would you sell one of the 2019 ?
You'll pick one up in the auctions for close to RRP
Cheapest I think I've seen the 19 go for on the auctions is 230+VAT?
Has anybody bought a whiskey from one of the UK based auctions. Are there import charges/duty?
