Had a fr heifer calf born this morning in cubicle shed. Cow due 15th January. I served a few in early April as I was penalised for not supplying enough milk last January. A sexed mo salah calf. All good. Best of luck for calving 2022
I put these pics up before. It's a yard I put a roof over, The crush was there already. I can hop into the crush and go down the side of the cow.
Thats a quare job! I wanna put in another crust up at the sheds and have more room to put machinery in, another calving pen would be a great addition like that.
Will we ever have enough sheds........😂😂😂
haha just one more then I’ll quit I promise!
I said that 13 years ago.......
Ha! How many sheds/yards/walls ago?!
Done 3 sheds since. Last one in 2018 and that’s my last - I promise.
First one calved this evening. A Pure bred sim cow. She had a ch bull calf by Fiston. Calved herself and calf up within the hour. Great when its happens like that
Are PB SIM not worth the effort?
Another brute there now. Ch bull off a roan . Another hair on him and I doubt I would have got him out.
Good stuff, never had to touch a cow calving to Fiston here, they don’t look like much when they land but don’t be long shaping up. He was always very easy calved here.
The dairy side is up and running. FR2249 heifer calf to start from a second calver.
Shes not registered and the calfs she throws when crossed with a ch bull turn out to be serious weanlings. Her calf last year that was born in January weighed 474 kgs when i sold him in September.
Another cow calved here today. She normally has a small calf, but this was a large bull. Good Silage and mild weather bringing them big so far.
Well men. How long would you leave a cow and calf in straw after calving? My old man has a cow with a calf in a pen since last day of October. I said can they not go in to slats now and he said no, no one does that, they'd get trampled and need somewhere to come out to.
A week to 10 days is our usual. They are on the slats then with access to straw creep area and cubicles.
Will the calf have somewhere to lie down off the slats?
4 to 5 days usually here. Put the cow back out on the slats with the calf having access to a pen with straw for lying on.
Anyone ever see this before?
Calf born this morning and has drank
Anyone here use that Ark Calf Saver? Is it worth getting?
Nasty lookin! Would the cow have stood on its tail?
What is it exactly? Could it have been attached to the placenta?
It seems to be it's anus, it's about an inch away from where it should be, with a bit of stuff hanging out of it. Doing a bit of bawling now . Waiting on a call back from vet
Ya always use here, great job to get them up and going
I'd say fire the photographer. Heifer of course. From the photo I can't see the anus under the tail?
I was walking across the yard a while after and she was doing terrible bawling, trying to pass dung . Vet said knackery. Rip calf . Mo salah calf ebi 260
second cow calved today about month before her time,First one calved about week ago same story only calf died after 10 mins.Vet said could be lepto-going to take blood samples from 2 cows on Monday.Farming 15 years only ever had one before her time before(the cow calved today 3 years ago). I put first one down to getting knock from a bully of a cow! I had stock bull last 3 seasons with no issues and went AI last year but bought young bull to sweep up.The two cows in question we’re both coming to Dovea bull Loki.
Depends on size of calf and how tight space is in shed, on average about a week, calf is let on slats and can go in and out via a gate to a bedded lay back area.
When space is tight i've let them work away after a coupe of days without any problems so far.
I'd start them on the lepto vaccine ASAP. It's 2 shots 2 weeks apart initially. Even while waiting on results. Are they on any minerals?
About week depending on how tight space is and calf strength & cow. They have creep access to dry straw bed. Had calf last year that always stayed on the slats with her cow. I used to push her back out thru the creep gate at night but by the time Id be out she would be back in stuck to the cow.
Usually one week cow goes to slats and calf has access to good clean straw lie back.
