12 pack cans were 10 euro in my local centra before the new legislation. I had a look yesterday and they were now 24 euro.
Look at what rip off Ireland has reduced us to
Absolutely, I'm in Cork and I'd definitely go up once or twice a year and stock up. As others have said, I would also do some other shopping up there and as a result, other non-drink related enterprises down south will suffer. Even from cork its an easy 3.5 hour drive up the motorway and a nice day out or overnight trip.
I am very happy to read all the post.
Have you ever been to newry coming up to Christmas? Clogged with southern cars with regs from everywhere from waterford to Limerick etc
We'll see more 15 packs I'd say.
They come in around the €25 mark
24 pack slabs will probably be pretty rare.
Will they still sell Slabs to the quantity of old ?
Sobering (no pun) sight at prices while walking through the Dunnes and Tesco off licenses this evening. Not a big drinker these days but still glad I stocked up before Christmas.
Minimum price 500ml 4.3% = 1.70
24 * 1.70 = 40.80
So if the cans are 440ml 3.6% and there is only 20 cans, price goes to 1.25 per can. Slab price at 25e. This is the way its going to work. Lower alcohol/lower size/smaller cases.
I would be interested in some sort of whatsapp/telegram group where we can get together and figure out a way to get some cheap booze. Like one person drives to the North and gets a stash..ahh wishful thinkin
There still will be booze deals, maybe not as many. If Hendricks gin goes for 30e, that's a deal, normal rrp 45e.
it's all there
I just googled and came across collection points in Jonesborough (post office)
I've been looking for a collection point in Newry that Amazon & others will deliver too. Would you mind sharing the details please?
I got some good deals on spirits bought from amazon uk delivered to a collection point in newry. Not ideal for everyone but the savings were quite large and you get 16 days to collect them.
You are right the border constituents are already shopping in Enniskillen soon to be joined by those from further afield.
It's either that or pony up and pay the inflated booze prices which are cheered on by Frankie et. al.
Frank Feighan T.D's border constituants won't suffer, so he won't suffer a loss of votes, except for those who spend election day shopping in Enniskillen.
Michael McDowell in the Irish Times today criticising MUP.
Lots of comments in response, very little support for MUP. If a measure targetting the drinking classes can't get support from IT subscribers, it will be an albatross around the government's neck.
Would releasing slabs of small cans be workable and be some loophole?
I have 2 slabs left but with the early pub closes that won't last long
And he represents a border county.
Can just see him standing at the side of the N 16 shouting "won't someone please think of the children" while his constituents speed by heading for Enniskillen.
There doesnt appear to be a straight forward way out of it. One would hope that common sense would prevail but its doubtful. Publicans seem to be of the opinion that we will all rush back. That wont be the case. 15 pints is about 90 quid in my local give or take. So do the Math.
I'm not against tackling the overly cheap sale of alcohol per say. But this is just arbritrary. No reason why single units should not have been tackled on their own. Like say a single can or anything less than 8 cans cant be sold below a certain price. Slabs at Christmas etc should have been left at 24 quid maybe. Most would have probably taken that.
This probably belongs on the mup thread.
I think Frank underestimates how much pocket money a 13 year old gets. Maybe he should, you know, make it illegal to sell alcohol to children?
Frankie is turning out to be the Comical Ali of MUP.
This is from a local paper today -
"We are taking this action to ensure that cheap strong alcohol is not available to children and young people at pocket money prices and to help those who drink to harmful levels to reduce their intake. I am proud that Ireland is among the first countries in the world to introduce this measure and to take real action to help those who need it the most."
Think you'll find that it originated from Roisin Shortall in 2011.

This is the idiot that started it all.
Look forward to meeting him next election.
Sent him an email regarding Senior Citizens and appeal of Northern Ireland for shopping in 2022 and only got a reply from his private secretary with a copy and paste job of statistics and other rubbish.
As in the 1980`s people will travel north for booze and then decide to do their grocery shopping also. Will make it a family day out and go for a meal and perhaps an overnight.
I was in Dunnes today for groceries and even though I didn't need anything I entered "the house of fun" through the swing doors just for a nosey.
It's really bad what has happened to the price of ordinary drinks bought by ordinary people.
A fraud has been committed on the Irish home drinker.
No that's been illegal since last year.
That's crazy, so could a shop sell @ €28.00 for 15 cans and give you a voucher back ? I think this is the only way they are going to stop a lot of people heading north
Error
It's not the worst. I'm only really going to notice it with slabs (RIP) a Christmas. September I was paying 14 euro for 8 Heineken in Lidl. Today I'm paying 16. Similar with Guinness.
