New Munster chat thread folks. warning deserved there. https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=109477571#post109477571
Same poster does the same on Formula 1 thread. Ruins every discussion. Had on ignore on old site so obviously didn’t transfer across to new site.
Yera I was bored this evening anyway 😅
The penny has dropped :)
You’re complaining about not getting answers but you don’t seem too willing to answer questions yourself. This will be the 3rd time I’ve asked:
If retention is an issue, which coaches do you think it's poor that they didn't retain? And what more could Munster have done?
And maybe you’re not getting answers because you’re moving the goalposts; coaching and coaching retention are very distinct things.
With regards coaching, if you’re looking for an issue, I don’t think we’ve gotten the most out of Larkham. I think the skill set in the forwards hasn’t come on as much as I would’ve hoped. We’ve seen it in spells, and they are trying (Archer pop passes, John Ryan offloads, Kleyn tip on pass) but it’s not quite as fluid or accurate as you’d like.
But I don’t think there are issues with coaching or player retention for the reasons I’ve spelled out.
And I think there are far fewer issues with player development than there previously have been for the reasons others have spelled out.
Why is Stephen Larkham rated so highly? I get he was a great attacking player but that doesn't translate into coaching. It seems the media have set a narrative that he is being held back from unleashing amazing rugby but i haven't seem any proof of this. What got him the job? where was this great attack he is know for?
Oh my god go away
We're not winning with JVG so it's the someone else must be better syndrome. I remember Johnny Giles once saying an injured player is often seen as being better than the players playing as the injured player doesn't make mistakes and doesn't carry the blame for losing.
As an aside I see Kleyn has to have a knee scan and Jenkins is injured again.
Graham Rowntree's signed a new two year deal to continue as forwards coach.
Wonder would he do that without knowing who JVGs successor is?
although with the 6 month thing it probably isn’t as big a deal.
I believe he genuinely means it. He's pretty straight talking, and the one coach who's clearly made a difference.
Finally some good news.
There is something comforting having a forwards coach with moshed up ears. Plus he does seems like a straight up decent fella. No bs talk.
Just wondering how instrumental was van Graan or "The Professional Game Board" in getting him in 2019?
At the last in-person mrsc agm JvG said that Rowntree was his first choice and he called him to talk about the job.
I'd imagine, that like any coach, Rowntree spoke to a few people before taking up the role. But I think he knew already that Munster was his type of club.
This sounds like Rowntree is the de facto head coach now and probably officially at the end of season

This sounds like Rowntree is the de facto head coach now
??
It does?? how do you make that out from that article ?
I cant see where you're getting that from in the article you quoted.
It sounds like he would like to be Head coach and has put himself forward for the position. But it doesn't say anything about how munster feels about it. It would be a big step up for him.
I'd say munster will be looking for other options and have him as a backup of they can't find anyone they want more than Rountree. Seems like a good lad, said all the right things in that interview. I doubt munster was thinking of making him head coach but he might prove to be the best option available.
Will an Irish coach ever get a chance to reach for the top of their chosen profession in this country again?
I am always on the look out for our next special player for Ireland and was wondering what the view on Aherne has been since he has started to get some game time.
Would it be fair to say he hasnt set the world on fire or how has he gone in the chances he has had.
Probably similiar situation to Baird, looks freakish at under age but how does he look in " senior Hurling" to paraphrase an ould politican.
Yes there will. Loads of young coaches learning abroad and will get chance in time be it ROG, Noel McNamara or any of the others in England, France.
yeah thats a reasonable take from that article..
but it certainly doesn't give the impression that "he's the de facto head coach currently"
He's been fine in the games he's played. When you say not set world on fire what were you expecting?
*Young player isn't as dominant in senior rugby as he is in underage rugby.
Wow, that's mad isn't it
Im reading between the lines....
If I'm a Munster player there is only really one coach who I'm really listening to....and he's saying
"The head coach question, well that's one for another day. What I can tell you is the club and all the parties concerned are very aware of my coaching aspirations."
Do you think Munster aren't looking at him as a potential head coach? And thus are prob giving him more say than in his "current capacity"
I would think so but they will probably have to leave Ireland to come back again (Jackman, Davidson and O'Gara). Mike Prendergast is a candidate but I would say he is eager to get on the the head coaching merry-go-round in France. Connacht appear to be embracing Irish coaching.
Head coach must me an extremely difficult job and realistically with only 4 positions available an Irish coach is only really going to get a chance in the near future by been promoted from within (Axel, McCall, Bradley, Elwood, Cullen). And that's probably even a harder position from which to be successful.
Seems strange for Munster to contract Rowntree for two more years right now.
They know full well a new head coach / DoR may not want him on their ticket at all and yet theyve put themselves on the hook that they'll have to buy him out of this new contract, in that event. Given how bad finances are generally, it just seems reckless.
Given the current injury issues at lock
and given Munster have a plethora of back row options.
Is there anything to be said for Coombes playing lock?
He has the size and it would make for a seriously skilful and pack if Beirne and Coombes played together, with a back row of POM, Kendellan and JOD.
Probably won't happen but it would be entertaining and I'd love to see it
i suppose some plays like the ones that made him stand out under age for Ireland.Exceptional young players who go on to have stellar international careers tend to make their mark very quickly in the pro ranks.
Looking at him as a potential head coach.... Absolutely they should be.
"Giving him more say than his current capacity"... Im not sure any executive board has that power in a coaching ticket.... Ie making him "de facto head coach" when JVG is still very much there
He was played lock when he came through he's a better back row
Do they? He's 21 it's not particular common for players to tearing it up at 21 particularly in the front 5
