Tesco Arthur's Quay Limerick had loads of Carlsberg slabs but they were 45 euros!! 😭
Lidl in Carlow had about 20 trays of carlsberg for €20 today. I picked up two crafty boxes still at €15 each.
If I leave a 7am on a saturday morning and head north I will be back home before midday with a van load. I am going to let the dust settle first and see how many cars/vans are checked first. Dryish Jan will help.
The fact that the retailers will keep all of the increase was kept very quiet, they could have given it to a more deserving cause.
This is the issue. Retailers have been selling below cost
Now they'll have to find something else to bring customers in
Saw the new prices in Tesco earlier, nothing that I would buy has changed.
The cheap crap is gone and that can only be a good thing
Really? You dont buy any of the biggest brands in wine beer spirits when on offer?
No guinness, heineken, santa rita, jameson etc
You dont buy any wines in Aldi or lidl under 8 euros?
What do you buy?
I think this thread will be of greater use from Tuesday as we will still be looking for bargains. There are plenty of products that are sold way above MUP and when on sale, will still come in above MUP.
And I look forward to hearing from our first expeditionary foray into NI.
(though it might take a while with all the stockpiling that's been going on 🙂 )
Checked supervalu site , dunleary and deansgrange showed up as having 24 guinness. Nothing in store though
You're a bit of a drinks connoisseur then?🤔
Centra in seabury Malahide are selling off there 12 cans of Guinness for €8.
Plenty of stock
I keep thinking of Blurs Charmless Man "educated the expensive way, he knows his claret from his beaujolais" when that poster rails against what he considers inferior products.
The beauty of choice is that you don’t have to buy the “cheap crap” but to others that “cheap crap” might be perfectly alright.
I’m relatively into my wines and I can tell ya that the €7 cote du rhone that aldi used to stock up until last year would outdo wines that were retailing at close to €100
Also litres of gin for €20 is something that we’ll look back on as a glorious time
They had a €5.99 pinot grigio rosé that I rated higher than rosés that were many multiples of that price
AFAIK they don't pick from the local store which might explain why there is no stock in store but you can order for click and collect (from that same store).
Does mup apply to wholesale or on licence sales? Is there any law against a shop keeper giving a slab to a loyal customer at Xmas if they spend a certain amount or via a Fr Ted style raffle?
I don't usually comment on the taste or quality of drinks preferring to just post the price and let people try themselves but what the hell exceptional times and all that.
A lot of the wines I have bought on offer in the €5 to €6 range have been the equal of house wines in pubs/restaurants charging €20 to €23 a bottle.
Anyone know if peroni bottles are still on offer anywhere if I take a spin around tomorrow?
Sounds about right for those rip-off merchants...
Lidl still had Perlenbacker on offer , also seen a few boxes of Molson for 12 euro
No reason to worry about being checked.
"..How did this law come to pass? It affect most adults in this country but I can’t remember anyone mentioning this during last year’s election..."
How - or maybe who?
Driven by none other than the Grinch and the Deputy Grinch -they drove this campaign right through:-
https://www.irishmirror.ie/news/irish-news/dr-tony-holohan-denies-nphet-24441540
".....Dr Holohan played a key role in developing the Public Health (Alcohol) Act, which made provisions for minimum unit pricing, the advertising of alcohol and restrictions on the sale of alcohol...."
Same people who have closed all pubs for nearly two years, and when they allowed them open, for you to be out in the cold and the wet - or home by 8 o'clock.
Here is the next wheeze :-
https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-30927505.html
"The Director of Public Health for the south of Ireland has said future alcohol laws should look to restrict the number of new licenced premises in problem drinking areas......
Dr Ronan Glynn, the Department of Health’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer, also attended the launch and praised the report as thoughtful and insightful.
The report has some really stark findings for the people of Cork and Kerry,.... "
Nope.
I like a decent ale - never have seen any bottle I buy under €1.79. It's probably 20+ years since I drank lager. Guinness is something I drink in the pub
I think the lowest I've paid for a bottle of wine is €9. Valpocello Rispasso at 9.99 in Aldi is my go-to bottle. Its still 9.99 and a bargain at that too. Santa Rita would not be something I'd drink. I like a good whiskey, standard Jameson does not come into the reckoning for me, but I suspect many places will sell it at €22.10 - most of the year its €25+ anyway. I still reckon I'll get Bushmills 10 for €30 at different times of the year.
I wonder how many pubs will start selling cans? Local pubs I suspect. Those who bought them from Dunnes.
18e 500 ml cans
14e bud btls, Miller and rockshore
Guinness 15 for 15
Tesco, nothing that I can see of note
Does anyone know if there's cheap slabs in Aldi? Last year my local one had Bud and Guinness at 20 until near the end of January
Seriously, where have you been ?
Some more examples, the Freeman's Bay NZ Sav in Aldi is a really very nice for the price point, going up by a euro by the looks.

It's a personal choice but I actually like the Perlenbacher Pilsner that Lidl sell.
At 6.33 for 12 cans, I was happy.
Any other choices from Lidl or Aldi that people recommend?
Anywhere in Cork with cheap Guinness slabs left on this the last day of cheap booze?
