The end for Booze deals is upon us, These signs going up in a Tesco near you soon !
We could get this repelled one day hopefully. My dad was telling me that 20 years ago alcohol from supermarkets was expensive and the prices we're seeing now are incredible.
They were that price (€2/can) due to the fact that "below cost selling" was banned, This was removed years ago which allowed Supermarkets to sell Beer cheaply (below cost) to attract customers.
Just got 5 slabs of the 538ml Guinness cans in Dunnes Jetland for a tenner each. Halcyon days lads. There's a good few left inside the separate off licence section but the shutters aren't fully open, I asked a worker nicely could I get some.
I'll be putting them up in Dunnes first thing Tuesday morning. In super early to change every price in the off licence before 10.30.
a tenner a slab is just an insane price
Can you buy those €10 slabs online from Dunnes?

Not a sniff of any of those 10e slabs in northside SC.
Online at Dunnes.
Henry St had none this morning when I was in, someone had got there before me. Jetland had I would say about 30 on display, i was the first customer and took 5.
Was in all 4 of the dunnes today as was after 10+slabs (for a planned family event). Got three on Childers road that were not even on display. Abandoned on a Trolley and all taped up as they were damaged
Nabbed em and disappeared quick 😅. The party will need to be watered at MUP prices.
I'd be expecting to see lots of stuff at precise MUP, without much rounding. Just like after the euro came in you saw exact conversions, and in some oddball shops you can still see it sometimes. It will be an easy advertising tag line for shops in the future, mentioning that the price is at the minimum, that would mean no rounding is allowed. As fewer are paying with cash the oddball change is not much of an issue.
Dunnes in bishopstown cork , everything available to buy online at ten euros a slab.
So I drove down and everything was of course not at 10 euros a slab cheapest they had was carlsberg and molson 15 euros ,so I picked up a few .
The molson scanned at 26 euros but got that sorted
24 slabs ordered from Dunnes online. Think that will do for awhile 😂

Wow, look at this.
Thankfully we haven't seen the last of the DG man
Once the minium pricing kicks in on Tuesday, cheap beer will be a thing of the past :(
Cans won't be able to be sold for less than €1.80 each i think it is :(
Yeah the 440ml can x 3.5% alc is the way around it here.€1.21 a tin minimum.
A fairly standard 500ml can with 4% alc =€1.57 minimum.
Lidl Terenure still has a few Bud Slabs at €20.
Was in there myself today having a look at the drink section, got sadness and anxiety all rolled into one at some of the prices !
Head for the North!
This thread will be redundant from Tuesday. No more cheap alcohol in any form.
Sean Barrett, the economist, has been warning that MUP will hit the poor disproportionately and will be a bonanza for the drinks trade. Even those who want to ban cheap booze will find it hard to gainsay his argument that the tax system should be used I.e. the public purse should cream off the extra cost but MUP means the booze trade will get an €80 Million annual bonanza.
How did this law come to pass? It affect most adults in this country but I can’t remember anyone mentioning this during last year’s election. Did anyone propose an excise duty with the same effect I.e. create a minimum cost for alcohol?
You probably heard that MUP has been a success in Scotland. It certainly decreased the quantity of alcohol sold, as would a price increase for any product.
But did it reduce alcohol abuse?
The Lancet published a detailed study based on retail surveys. The media announced that the study showed MUP was a success is Scotland.

But what about this finding:
following the introduction of MUP, the lowest income households did not seem to reduce the amount of alcohol they purchased, and their expenditure on alcohol increased
So the group which MUP is supposed to target - the heavy drinking poor family -is spending more on alcohol because of MUP!
