I honestly don't know the exact time.
I was working as chef in charge at work and I was told that Shirley had found the body of the French woman - this was at some point before service started (which is all that matters in a busy kitchen) but not long before as prep was just finishing up. Service began at 12:30.
"The French woman" was not meant as insult or dismissive, it was because none of us had met Sophie so her name wouldn't have meant anything. We would understand "the French Woman".

I was told by my then mother in law who was working front of house that morning.
She looked utterly shocked when she came into the kitchen so I asked her what was wrong. Tbh if service had started I possibly wouldn't even have noticed she was there.
She was due to travel to West Cork that afternoon where Alfie and Shirley would be her and her husband's dinner guests that evening so it was hardly a casual gossip situation. Alfie and my (now ex) father in law were long term close friends so the news being shared among them isn't really an indication of when it became general knowledge.
No, I'd say its fairly realistic considering how they handled this investigation & their behavior over the last number of years.

But the problem is this: they are people who have power over the ordinary folk. There's a power imbalance. So we hold them, or we should, to a higher standard of behaviour than others.
The catholic church: less so than in previous generations, thankfully. The generation where my grandmother was harassed by the parish priest for having over a year gap between her children and wouldn't dare stand up for her rights. The gardai haven't changed *that* much tho, except where they've been forced to.
Anyway, I digress.
They acted sh*t and got away with a huge amount in this investigation. And that's why we're still here 25 years later.
I would very much disagree simply because we have little to no clue how our so called police force act but when these cases are brought to the public domain, they aren't published nearly enough. Its an extremely serious matter when gards use their privileged position in society to screw mens wives. The body over them are a waste of time, they are immune from prosecution in many cases, no wonder they feel they can do what they want.
Its relevant to this case because this is the exact type of behavior that resulted in this crime not being solved & allowing the perpetrator to walk free who is more than likely one of their own given how they deliberately screwed up this investigation at every turn.

If you could have had a conversation with Sophie`s killer in the days after the murder, what might have been going through his mind and if you caught him off guard, would he let slip that train of thought?
