They committed to the appointment of a DPO way before the report came out Andrew.
But broadly, it's 'as you were' ...just make sure and do the following things.
Broadly yes, but they have to tell people that they're recording their data, have a proper DPO with a proper privacy policy setting out their retention of data, and give people to right to have their data updated or deleted.
OMG a graphic designer will have to add a line of text to a poster? How will they ever function as a political party again?
A 'question' asked on a forum?
Far as I can see SF can carry right on doing what they were doing, What would I have to take on the chin there Mark?
Wordpress and Joomla aren't databases. They are content management systems. There is no standard database structure. They can both be configured to provide database functions, probably using add-ins.
A bespoke database is exactly what I'd expect here. The Irish electoral register structure is unique, so off-the-shelf solutions from the UK or the US would not be usable here.
Have a go at SF for their data protection practices by all means, but the bespokeness is not an issue here.
In a way, yes it was secret as nobody in the public knew of its existence before it was reported on in the media.
This is what the DPC has to say about it.
So now, every election poster, letter and pamphlet from SF will have to have a notice pointing its way towards the Abu database.
What is the problem (nobody has outlined one) using this data for canvassing and electoral purposes?
Seeing as the DPC has outlined what SF have been doing with their Abu database was not lawful, I guess you will take this one on the chin Francie?
The phrase "bespoke database" sounds rather odd. Perhaps it means that it is not like a Wordpress or Joomla database which has a standard schema (structure) that does not vary from installation to installation. The report is quite mild and finds fault with other parties too. The fact that there were no sanctions or fines must be really upsetting for FG and its supporters in the media. Whatever credibility those FG supporters in the media had is damaged by the findings in the report which just amounted to a set of recommendations to make things compliant with GDPR.
Regards...jmcc
Yeh, so secret SF were passing out printed booklets on how to use it. 😁😁
So its not secret now??you lot run about and change yous mind by the minute at this stage😅
.....come here to me,did the report also say, there is no law banning such data bases of voters intentions/permissions??
And said report outlined that the database had breached the transparency cornerstone of GDPR. It was secret until Sinn Fein got caught.
Whitewashing?
The report made recommendations blanch. Maybe you should consider a civil case because the DPC didn't think this warranted sanction or fine.
Theres no secret database?
I mean theres literally a report outlining its existance?
The whitewashing of the report on here is incredible. No way should any political party be maintaining its own secret electronic national database on voters.
The magic of Christmas has disappeared this story.
If you get a chance over the holiday break read this -
I have and it reinforces my decision not to engage with any canvasser or pollster ever again.
If you don't tell them anything they won't have any data to misuse.
"Democracy is a fragile flower"
😁 blanch, the breaches didn't warrant a fine or even a sanction. Just recommendations. Hardly the 'significant and serious breaches' being trumpeted by somebody at the start of this thread.
SF's "sinister" data gathering? Quite laughable to see the room-temperature IQed FG propaganda lines being rolled out again. :) FG's friends in the Dublin media landed FG and FF in the crap while running hit pieces on SF. It was funny to see it all unfold and there have been no sanctions or fines.
The way you are trying to whitewash the implications for Sinn Fein suggest that you are missing something. Let us see where it goes.
At the minimum, Sinn Fein's sinister data gathering exercise will be curbed.
I thought we were told there were serious consequences for breaches of this legislation.
I must have missed something.
You were told all parties had issues...which has turned out to be bang on the money.
You were alos told by me that this was an issue for SF to deal with, they have. And that seems to be the end of it.
Don't know about that. Firstly, we were told all parties were doing the same, yet Sinn Fein get a whole chapter of the Report devoted to their bespoke database which has the most serious recommendations. They have also been told to change all their election literature to tell voters that they are recording them in the database, which is not a good look.
By 'backed off' you mean 'carried out a formal investigation to address issues arising, with appropriate follow up action'?
There is that kind of aspect to how parties are supported but this was a bit of a non-story being pushed by FG and its buddies in the media. It also backfired badly. Canvassing is hard work and there does seem to be a bit of a divide between supporting a party on Social Media and supporting it in real life.
Tbh most of the posting on the issue, only served to highlight how many passionate posters on politics,(near football like in their partisanship),
have never actually canvassed for anything, nor stood at an info/leaflet desk
Bluffers one and all
Yep. Things just haven't been going well for FG since Leo the Leak took over. One bad election after another and even losing a safe seat in the FG heartland. FG's buddies in the Dublin media had built this up to be a major issue and it turned out to be anything but. It also had the DPC examine the websites of other parties including FG. Turned out that some of those were not compliant.
How many times must they shoot themselves in the foot? Embarrassing at this stage.
You cannot blame this one on the Shinners.
The DPC commissioner backed off as soon as it was apparent that all had questions to answer.
Guess things didn't go as planned for FG and its buddies in the Dublin media. No sanctions or fines for SF. It was funny to see all the FG database "experts" in the media waffling about what SF was doing. The ranting from FGers in the media about SF hosting its database on a US hoster was quite ironic considering, as it turned out, that FG was using the same hoster.
From the Report
"The provision of transparent information to data subjects is one of the key cornerstones of the GDPR"
"In simple terms, therefore, prior to the publication of the privacy policy for the Abú database on 22 April, 2021 no information was made available to electors/voters in any format to comply with the transparency requirements of the GDPR"
Basically, Sinn Fein were in breach of one of the key cornerstones of the GDPR.
Except that the report makes clear that the issues are mainly with one party.
