The issue we have with SF is that they had a secret electoral register that was populated by extra data that no one had any consent over. THAT is the issue, consent. This entire thread is a huge 'whatabout'

Irish Scientific Surveys was set up during the 1990s by former TD Pat Upton and a previous director of elections Niall Connolly, who are both listed as directors, with its purpose stated as "public opinion polling".

here is the DPC report on electoral databases etc https://www.dataprotection.ie/en/news-media/latest-news/data-protection-commission-publishes-report-data-protection-audit-political-parties-ireland just says inform people if you are using them, says SF only party to have a national database, doesn't seem that it looked at constituency branches, DPC as usual doing the least possible, not being tough enough.
Nothing was ever going to happen or be done once this turned out to be an issue for all parties.
Except that the report makes clear that the issues are mainly with one party.
From the Report
"The provision of transparent information to data subjects is one of the key cornerstones of the GDPR"
"In simple terms, therefore, prior to the publication of the privacy policy for the Abú database on 22 April, 2021 no information was made available to electors/voters in any format to comply with the transparency requirements of the GDPR"
Basically, Sinn Fein were in breach of one of the key cornerstones of the GDPR.
Guess things didn't go as planned for FG and its buddies in the Dublin media. No sanctions or fines for SF. It was funny to see all the FG database "experts" in the media waffling about what SF was doing. The ranting from FGers in the media about SF hosting its database on a US hoster was quite ironic considering, as it turned out, that FG was using the same hoster.

You cannot blame this one on the Shinners.
The DPC commissioner backed off as soon as it was apparent that all had questions to answer.
How many times must they shoot themselves in the foot? Embarrassing at this stage.
Yep. Things just haven't been going well for FG since Leo the Leak took over. One bad election after another and even losing a safe seat in the FG heartland. FG's buddies in the Dublin media had built this up to be a major issue and it turned out to be anything but. It also had the DPC examine the websites of other parties including FG. Turned out that some of those were not compliant.
Tbh most of the posting on the issue, only served to highlight how many passionate posters on politics,(near football like in their partisanship),
have never actually canvassed for anything, nor stood at an info/leaflet desk
Bluffers one and all
There is that kind of aspect to how parties are supported but this was a bit of a non-story being pushed by FG and its buddies in the media. It also backfired badly. Canvassing is hard work and there does seem to be a bit of a divide between supporting a party on Social Media and supporting it in real life.
By 'backed off' you mean 'carried out a formal investigation to address issues arising, with appropriate follow up action'?
Don't know about that. Firstly, we were told all parties were doing the same, yet Sinn Fein get a whole chapter of the Report devoted to their bespoke database which has the most serious recommendations. They have also been told to change all their election literature to tell voters that they are recording them in the database, which is not a good look.
You were told all parties had issues...which has turned out to be bang on the money.
You were alos told by me that this was an issue for SF to deal with, they have. And that seems to be the end of it.
I thought we were told there were serious consequences for breaches of this legislation.
I must have missed something.
The way you are trying to whitewash the implications for Sinn Fein suggest that you are missing something. Let us see where it goes.
At the minimum, Sinn Fein's sinister data gathering exercise will be curbed.
SF's "sinister" data gathering? Quite laughable to see the room-temperature IQed FG propaganda lines being rolled out again. :) FG's friends in the Dublin media landed FG and FF in the crap while running hit pieces on SF. It was funny to see it all unfold and there have been no sanctions or fines.
😁 blanch, the breaches didn't warrant a fine or even a sanction. Just recommendations. Hardly the 'significant and serious breaches' being trumpeted by somebody at the start of this thread.
The magic of Christmas has disappeared this story.
If you get a chance over the holiday break read this -
I have and it reinforces my decision not to engage with any canvasser or pollster ever again.
If you don't tell them anything they won't have any data to misuse.
"Democracy is a fragile flower"
The whitewashing of the report on here is incredible. No way should any political party be maintaining its own secret electronic national database on voters.
Theres no secret database?
I mean theres literally a report outlining its existance?
Whitewashing?
The report made recommendations blanch. Maybe you should consider a civil case because the DPC didn't think this warranted sanction or fine.
