Multi-billion dollar DefCorps are never not up to old tricks.
The pilots say very little can touch the F35 for situational awareness and reducing the workload so that pilot can focus on the fight.
At this point who knows what is true. Seems very comprised and too expensive to me. But maybe it will come good.
If they stop throwing them off carriers at least....
in fairness it wasn't thrown off. It rolled off very slowly.
Bet it didn't seem slow to the pilot. Thankfully he was unharmed.
Early reports are it ingested something on takeoff. It will be interesting if they release the report.
i thought it was because they hadn't removed a rain cover before take-off.
Ah, human error- billions of dollars of research , decades of development, the Pinnacle of design , and it crashed because someone didn't do their pre-flight check properly ..
I heard that also. Bit Thats seems unlikely there would be a load of ground crew watching it launch. Checking prefight etc. never mind the pilots own preflight. I wonder was it something off something else on deck, another aircraft.
it didnt look to be anything else on deck from the video. Simple human error can never be dismissed so easily.
I agree with the comments posted by respected poster Larbre concerning the excellent South Korean KAI advanced trainer MR aircraft. Note that this comes in various configurations and a mixed batch would cover all needs from training / interception and ground attack. Just the ticket for the AC and a hellova lot of bang for your buck!
How will it be dismissed. They will investigate this for months. Every tiny detail. Especially peoples adherence to procedures.
Hard to know what it will cost though, both as a package and to operate. If its much the same as a Griphen.....
Ireland should a 100 strong fleet of F22 Raptors. This is eminently feasible.
you dismissed it. you said it was unlikely. that is what I was referring to.
Not really Ireland related but an interesting article in the F35 and the US continued faith in the platform.
The article is actually quite reminiscent of Pierre Sorry and the 1970s fighter mafia and their pursuit of the Hi/Lo mix.
I can only imagine the consternation a US step back from the full buy as planned would cause. Airframe costs would IMO ramp up significantly for the other nations with the loss of that economy of scale.
Having asked before I now know that unless you steal them or get 100 hundred pilots to defect to the AC with the f22 it ain't happen.
They don't sell the F22.
It's also out of production for over a decade.
Bit too high tech maybe... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0x7-oo9NAk
Off topic but also relevant, Does anyone if the commissions report is released yet?
The joke doesn't work with the F35 though...
They are not water proof that’s for sure…
Nope, hasn't gone to the Minister yet, but has been floated to the relevant senior officials/officers, according to the Irish Times yesterday it's being slated by everyone that's read it.
They aren't even made anymore, and could never be restarted, think the last story had it that the USAF is hopeful their planned upgrade program will get them through to the 6Gen fighter they are in prototyping of right now. There's the added issue like the T1 Typhoons that some of the earliest planes are almost economically un-upgradeable.
Trying to keep up with it on Twitter, the good thing about the report is it seems to be getting a lot more publicity than previous pleas for funding, RACO have been begging Commision to ask for everything(to be excepted) I reckon they are doing it in terms of a bidding uneconomically high and something a little will be the accepted. I really hope it is considered I’ve family in the military who are thinking of leaving because it’s unacceptable. I went for another service thankfully but just as under funded.
Saying you find something is unlikely doesn't mean it didn't happen.
The smallest thing can down an aircraft.
Unless it's delayed into the new year it's hard to see how they could produce two more versions of it with the time they have left tbh. I'm leaning more towards the negative at this stage .
They need to add time to the project to finish it properly. If that means Q2, so be it.
If it's kicked into Q2 does anything get done about the coming wave of manpower losses we are about to face? There's also the coming disruption of likely a new minister to add to things by that stage.
But it isn't unlikely.
Maybe I should have said I find it unbelievable to avoid the pedantry police.
They take particular care on Aircraft Carriers, to check for foreign debris and removing covers etc.

To miss the covers left on the jet, (if thats what happened) means a basic and obvious check was missed by numerous people.
Another Fighter delivery
As part of the deal, pilots for the KAF Typhoons are undergoing operational training with the Italian Air Force, at Grosseto Air Base, home of the Italian operational conversion unit (OCU).
The overseas training effort is of vital importance for the KAF. The service doesn’t operate its own training fleet, with both its Short Tucano turboprop trainers and Hawk Mk 64 jet trainers currently being grounded. While there have been abortive plans in the past to return at least the Hawks to airworthiness, both Tucanos and Hawks are previous-generation types that lack the advanced cockpits required to prepare pilots for the Typhoon or Super Hornet.
Instead, KAF pilots complete basic and advanced training phases with the Italian Air Force at Lecce-Galatina Air Base, flying the Aermacchi MB-339, before undergoing lead-in fighter training (LIFT) on the same service’s Leonardo M-346 at the same base.
