What are your thoughts on this?
Me personally I think it's weird.
Of course it’s fake!
Santa isn’t real.
Society doesn't progress by inclusion - that is not self-evident. It progresses by changing customs. The next turn in how society progresses might be to include those groups with "less" representation - but that might be the "small-minded" to whom you refer.
Customs change by the inclusions of other groups in society. Obviously.
You're onto something there!
Progress is merely measured by the amount of things you can stick your ding-a-ling in without getting weird looks.
I like to call it the dongOmeter. Santa Clause just pushed society's progress off the dong scale, a few more things like cats, kettles, sea breezes and moustachioed pistachios in which the dong can be dipped with magnanimous airs and society will have achieved the ultimate in progressivenessnessness.
Get out on the streets to march against exorbitant house prices? Non, non, non misieur. It's all about marching for dipped dingdongs.
I jest.
santa is a made up character. invented by coca-cola to sell more product.
yet somehow santa being gay is enough to corrupt young children ?
whats wrong with being gay ? Or is it only ok if it's hidden away and not "in the faces" of straight folk ?
I don't like the gold digging sentiment of Santa Baby but it's not overtly sexual, just flirty.
You're getting close to the truth with your coca cola analogy.
See also the fantastischen Fanta, invented by coca cola inside Nazi Germany to escape trade embargoes.
These companies, especially nowadays, don't give a flying figroll about how or what they sell.
In this case it's the sexualization of Santa clause. They arent representing or fighting for anything other than their bank balances, and controversy sells. So they sold the controversy. And you're buying it. And so am I in a different way!
It's one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time and it's played every Christmas. I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus is another and since kids believe he's a real, more sexualizing of him.... So yep, people kissing Santa etc isn't remotely new and has been pretty popular over the years.
im not buying anything lol
santa being gay or straight makes no difference to me whatsoever.
how is santa kissing another guy "sexualising" him but santa kissing a woman is not ?
If there's no difference, why did they choose Santa kissing a man? They could have had him kissing a woman. They could have had him kissing nothing.
What possible, unexplainable, reason do you think lies behind their choice of homosexualising santa clause?
Controversy. That's what lies behind their choice. They chose the most clickety clickable choice because it's clickety clickable.
erm... they can do whatever they want with santa...hes a fictional character.
“In 2022, it will be 50 years since it became legal to love whomever you want in Norway.”
seems as good a reason as any.
the fact that a gay santa gets you all riled up is something you need to deal with.
Yeah you're right, they can do whatever they want with santa.
Hold your breath for the goosetepping version of santa clause as he pulls a switch in a gas chamber to celebrate that special time of year.
Hmm, I wonder why we don't see that one?
"The fact that a gay santa gets.." people riled up, plural, is because that's what they set out to do.
Anyway this is going in circles. You refuse to accept that some random arseholes are generating controversy purposefully, and everyone else is to blame for taking the bait and have to overcome themselves yadda yadda homophobia blather blather bigots so on so on you find it all terribly amusing etc etc.
It's all very yawn-ish. Enjoy your clickety clickable "representation".
im fully aware that its generating controversy.
I just think it's amusing as the only ones who are riled up are those who think the gays need to be kept out of sight in case the children "catch it" or decide to give it a go lol.
depicting gay people positively in the media helps to de-stigmatize them instead of isolating them and teaching them that they're somehow less.
why is this bothersome to you?
How do you know all that?
@DarkJager21 : There is nothing sexual about Christmas.
🤣🤣🤣
Thats genuinely one of the funniest sentences I’ve ever seen written on Boards! Bravo!
the caption at the end says “In 2022, it will be 50 years since it became legal to love whomever you want in Norway.”
Only been 29 years in Ireland
Santa's sack may be emptied out this year!
Well, it's sort of the posters who tend to go for the 'woke gone mad' line and invariably those type people tend to express homophobic and other outrageous views on a regular basis. Invariably they're the kind the kind of people who will get annoyed by anti homophobia campaigns or gay penguins, basically they get annoyed that ads are happy to mix it up. I suspect this thread would not exist if a woman kissed Santa in the ad, nobody would care less. The fact that people are so incensed by an entirely innocent ad says a lot about the viewpoints of the posters in the thread...
Wow. Imagine being this triggered by people being gay.
They're not triggered by people being gay.
I used to be that very same sneery, "amused" person on these pages... then I came to the realisation that people's views are more complex than what I thought, and it isn't simply a case of "with us or against us".
Annoyance at the cynicism of companies trying to look cool and right-on and using identity politics is a separate thing. And if it was Santa snogging a woman, I'd also be thinking "wtf".
Nah they're triggered by the idea of a gay Santa. No real argument so far has come up about marketing or the ad itself, except for like one guy. Pretty much all the other comments have been people being pissy it shows a gay Santa. Quite a few comparisons to Nazi's too which I find super ironic.
Nobody would find it unusual if Santy was kissing Mrs Claus but because one ad depicts him as gay the pearl-clutching snowflakes are crying about it, hiding behind explaining it to their kids and bawling about traditions. It’s homophobia, plain and simple.
Another one of the team
Nope, an opinion.
I didn't say anything about Mrs Claus. There's no evidence that it's homophobia from all those who object to companies using identity politics to advertise. Saying "plain and simple" doesn't make something a fact.
Yep.
And its not even just about "icky" at all - Theres posts here that when you read between the lines they are basically seething and simmering about gay people existing or being openly discussed.
Mind readers everywhere.
Its only "controversial" because of people like you making a controversy out of it.
It's bothersome because it forced and unnecessary, why is it so so wrong to want or like traditional historical figures to be left alone?
I think its outrageous to suggest people who disagree with the ad as wanting to keep gays out of sight, or think children can catch it, that is an utterly ridiculous statement to make.
Look how far we've come in terms o tolerance, gay/bi people are afforded all the same rights and dignity's as "straight" people, we don't need to turn every historical figure gay to enhance gay positivity.
Its not outrageous at all when you read some of the posts in this thread.
Representing homosexuality in the media isn’t “identity politics.” Gay people are real and they have as much of a right to be represented as anyone else, even if it makes you personally uncomfortable. That’s nothing right-on or virtue signalling or whatever worthless buzzword people will come up with to excuse their discomfort towards homosexuality being shown in the media.
What it boils down to is that only people who are uncomfortable with the representation of homosexuality, for whatever reason, would have a problem with this ad. And it would probably be the same if he kissed a black woman or an Indian or a Maori. There would be blood on the streets if he kissed a Trans Woman judging by the comments in this thread.
I’d bet you anything the same people complaining wouldn’t make a peep if Santy kisses your typical rosy cheeked white Mrs Claus. They only want their own demographic represented in the media and catch a fit if anyone else wants to get a look in, calling it “identity politics” or a company being “right on.” 🙄😴
