I joined the queue at 7:50 and had 57K ahead of me when it opened.
No, it's a lottery after 8am. I refreshed and rejoined the queue around 7:58 and only had 15k ahead.

if you join queue earlier e.g 07:30 does it put you at front of queue or is it a lottery when clock strikes 08:00?
It wouldn't have made a difference queue didn't open until 7.45
How does it work once you get in? Do you get whatever tickets they offer, or have you the choice to choose a stand etc.?

150,000 ahead of me on the website but the app let me straight through and I could have bought 2 tickets now if I wanted them. So try the app.
queue moving approx 3000 every 5 mins, that means a 90 min wait for me if it continues this slow.
