Question from a non-farmer:
Typically, in Ireland, is there grass growth during Oct?
Typically, in Ireland, is there grass growth during Nov?
Grass grows when the soil temperature is warm enough, there’s good growth currently due to the mild weather
Thanks, so there is still some grass growth in mid-Nov, okay.
I wonder should I cut the lawn?
Cut away if it's dry enough 🙂
I let some weanlings into a field of strong grass today. 18th November - hard to believe.
Well if they're cancelling 999 calls, they could do anything
Looks like Jeremy has upset the badger charity; https://www.agriland.ie/farming-news/charity-calls-out-jeremy-clarkson-for-shocking-misunderstanding-of-cattle-disease/
Don't think there's much love lost between himself and Chris Packham.
Yeah, 14°C here in Cavan at 11pm.
Some days during the "summer" you'd be happy with that....
If ground temperature is over 7°C grass will grow.
Can see Signs of regrowth on paddock I took stock off last week.
Soil temp is 10c here, grass is growing but shorter daylight is slowing full potential.
Have fields closed since September for January grazing, very heavy covers on them at present.
Getting colder after Sunday i think.
Heading to the airport to go away for the weekend. Booked it when covid numbers were low. 6 milkings off
He will love that he poked the badgers nest....
It's nearly easier to get away for me when everything is in the sheds. Who's going to do all the work while you're away
4 out of 6 of us failed antigen tests here in this house. I passed and one of the children. Wife is making us all go for PCR today.
Unfortunately straight, the antigen tests are about 99% accurate the lady in the test centre told me.
I had the virus 3 weeks ago and was sick enough for about 3-4 days. How are they all?
Young lad and a lad will help milk milk
We're fine like. Bit of a cough. Sure we'll see. Only for the wife I wouldn't be going for a test but I've to do what I'm told. 😁
That lad has you spoiled
Neighbour tested negative twice at home on antigen test and positive on pcr...
Young lad with his head screwed on. Great gift for his father
same as that here passed the antigen test twice failed PCR , just out of my 10days, I'd have problems with sinus anyway so thats been the worse part hacking up gunk last few days and probably well tired after it. Daughter (unvaccinated) had it and had a cough for a day or so
Reading about the proposed eco schemes in the journal. One of the measures is planting of native trees. I wonder would hedging or white thorn more specifically be classified as a native tree?
Have a look at the following link from the Tree Council of Ireland -

Second day working for a neighbour sorting out an absolute clusterphuc of a septic tank and percolation area. The builders that built the house back around 04 05 were held in high regard around here. One thing for sure they shouldn't be left near drains or sewers.
Eave chutes turned into the septic tank. The tank is just a single chamber-not a proper septic tank with 2 Chambers. No proper inlet /outlet set up so solids could wash out into percolation area. Buried down about 2 ft and no cover on the surface so never emptied either.
Percolation area completely blocked up. Dug through some of it and saw very little stone. Probably too small to begin with and not helped by water from eave chutes.
This is the second one of these I've sorted in last 2 yrs. Same builder on both occasions. I'm of the opinion that it's one of the last jobs on a site to be done and if the profit on the build is gone slack this is one place to cut a few corners if there's no engineer around.
Was just wondering are there any septic tank inspections done now? Id say they'd come across some right bad cases. Probably best to leave sleeping dogs lie.
I enjoyed Christy Moore's new lyrics to Delirium Tremens on the Late Late Show.
@farawaygrass, I also looked at that article and tbh my initial reaction was that none of the schemes were for us, but I suppose a lot of farmers feel the same after reading it. I'm going to see what other possible proposals are added before the final submission.
In advance of this scheme I was looking at the possibility of planting native trees and chatted to the Son of a friend who is a horticulturalist. His advise was to only plant trees/shrubs that already grow within your area. He also suggested planting fruit trees like apple/damson but said to try and get traditional varieties that don't need yearly pruning in order to produce fruit. As I said above I'm very undecided as to the direction/future of this farm.
Meanwhile Brazil has cleared an area of the Amazon the size of Connaught in the last year.
If whitethorn is included in the tree planting It’d suit me ideal as I have a lot of hedging to plant.
if I was to go for the 7% set aside, I doubt I could count the hedging I’d plant, that would be double counting I suppose.
it’s a pity there isn’t more measures. I think I read the Danes have up to 40 actions to chose from. Hopefully the monster will broaden the measures
it’s hard to no about the future direction of farms alright. One day I’d feel despaired by it all, another I’d be thinking of kicking on. Food will still have to be produced, they can’t let people go hungry either.
imagine the hedge id be thinking of planting would be wiped out in a second out there
