Yeah I would have thought that myself, but boardsies are impressed - e.g.

I wouldn't use it as a primary box, but I've bought it for a 2nd TV - have the Nvidia Shield on my main TV.
It seems better value than the likes of Chromecast / Fire Stick, which people often use for this purpose..

Looks decent but I would spend the extra 13 euro on a Chromecast with Google TV. Direct software support from Google that way.
The Chromecast has Ads, no usb ports, no ethernet port.
Firesticks are just Android boxes without the Play Store.

Presume they mean the recommendations thing at top of screen, The banner with 3 suggestions that slowly change, even for services you don't have which I wasn't too bothered by. I'm getting poxy Roxi ads now which is slightly more irritating, but not enough for me to switch launchers yet.
You can turn those off from what I recall, no need to change launchers, they're not ads anyway.
No, you can’t turn that ad area off, it’s there to advertise services whether you’re subscribed to them or not.
Well, when you get the Roxi one it even says 'ad' where the TV service would be, so that's quite conclusive, and I'd say them recommending you things to watch on a streaming service is an ad for that service, no? You can't turn them off. I still think I'd probably rather have the Google product in this case though.
I'll have another look later so. Have never seen ads for services I don't have though

Wolf Launcher for the Firestick if you don't like the "ads"
I got one of these a few months ago directly from the company for the TV in the bedroom. We have Shield in the living room (which we only use for Kodi, IPTV & streaming services) and I honestly don't see any difference in performance between the two. I haven't benchedmarked them, that's just what I observe. VPNs etc all work very well on it.
One of the positives of this box over a Google for Chromecast TV or a Firestick (which we also have) is that it can take a Micro SD card or USB key meaning you can load movies etc onto it and use it in places you know you won't have any internet access, very handy if you're going on holidays etc.
Thanks, seems they could do with an update alright!! Shows how much I use that screen... The recommendations can be turned off in Apps Only Mode but the ads still show unfortunately.
The Nvidia shield is 2gb ram and it seems to keep everybody happy.
