The first of many, hopefully.
Each count of contempt of Congress carries a minimum of 30 days and a maximum of one year in jail, as well as a fine of $100 to $1,000. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
Not exactly harsh considering that you're defying a Congressional subpoena. Worst it would get for him is two years in jail, but probably more like 10 months in a minimum security Summer camp. If these are the punishments being meted out by the United States to people who aided and abetted an insurrection, the neo-fascists under Trump have every reason to feel emboldened. The ante needs upping.
"The best of people...."
Half his entourage are criminals.
LOL...the party of "law and order".
If you listen to his fans, this will only be the case due to a massive conspiracy organised by the Democrats to take Trump down. So it really makes zero difference at this stage, due to the level of devotion/brainwashing.
Yeah, at that point it's just layers and layers of delusion. Each one designed to explain the breaking of the previous one. You can't have a reasonable dialog with people like that. It's like mass schizophrenia.
The troubling question is what do you do with people you can't have a reasonable conversation with? Ignoring them has been tried and they've increased in number. Believing that you can just laugh at these people, ignore them and they'll eventually go away is a delusion in itself. Unfortunately, I keep on coming back to the same conclusion - there's some reckoning coming down the road for the USA if it continues on its path.
There absolutely is. If anyone thought that Biden beating Trump would be the end of it, they were entirely deluded. This sort of ignorance and stupidity is manifesting itself all over the world. Conspiracy theories are now overtaking facts and truth and it's hard to think of a way to turn that around.
Quick edit - an emblem of where we are at the moment was the fact that the eldest son of the most recent POTUS was selling t-shirts mocking Alec Baldwin's shooting of that photographer. Actually making money off a tragedy, and then you seen Trump supporters thinking it's hilarious. How do you combat that sort of needless ignorance and hate?
I was trying to think who Don Jr. reminds me of -
If anyone remembers 1996 series of Only Fools and Horses, episode 1 "Heroes and Villains", the opening couple of lines from the Wikipedia synopsis are as follows,
The episode opens with Rodney in a dystopian nightmare, in which Damien (pictured below), head of the now multinational Trotters Independent Traders, apparently rules the Western world in the year 2026, forcing President Keanu Reeves to declare war on China, claiming that "war is good".
President Keanu Reeves doesn't sound so bad now.
@PropJoe10 the needless ignorance "is bliss", or "ice cream" for them. I like to think of the audience in the amphitheatre.
A "no shit!" article if ever there was one, but still worth mentioning.
The Trump White House silenced health experts trying to warn the public about COVID-19, new testimony says
"...better decisions by the White House could have limited COVID-19 deaths by as much as 40%"
There will of course not be backlash from conservatives who were lied to over and over again by Trump, right-wing news etc. even though it has lead to the death of many of their family and friends as, to quote someone on Reddit, conservatives "would rather die than admit they were ever wrong".
Imagine if the roles were reversed there, and the Democrats were guilty of that? The hypocrisy in US politics is utterly horrendous, and as you said, there'll be zero backlash from conservatives on this. Somehow, it'll be Nancy Pelosi's fault. Or something.
“The U.S. has exceeded 47 million COVID cases since the start of the pandemic.”
Didn’t really go from 15 cases to 0.
Conspiracy theories are now overtaking facts and truth and it's hard to think of a way to turn that around.
This is a problem with the internet in general. There's a site or social media connection out there somewhere that will cater for the most ridiculous of beliefs. baseless conspiracy theory has now become the norm for some people with regards to their "politics" too, and the likes of Trump will use that stuff in order to build his base and keep them placated.
You're talking about a group of people that are waiting for JFK jr. to return and believe that, somehow, the Democrats have organised a massive, massive, fraud in the last election despite everything to the contrary.
How can you make any appeals to reason with people like that?
Keep 'em coming....
So they get hit with contempt. Can they be forced to take the stand?
That would be a no I'm afraid. I can imagine quite a lot of legal wrangling and bullsh*t excuses to just delay things again and again. 😔

WTF is going on, they have a population of 333 million people. Can they not get a decent person to run the country. Someone in their 40's 50's or early 60's with decent ethics and morals and a bit of talent that can lead the country. Something badly wrong when Trump is a viable option to 10's of millions of American voters and that Biden only gets the job at nearly 80.
This is why we voted Harris in the primary. Because it was business as usual with the Democrats, Biden is not inspiring, and an inanimate carbon rod would've defeated the 2d worst president in my memory (after Nixon). Just wasn't to be, she's too dark skinned for America.
Unfortunately the way the nominees are determined is laughable. Tiny subsets of the population choose over a very protracted period, with wildly different nominating mechanisms (caucases? Really?)
And then there's just the silliness of not having something like FPTP, and preserving the paleo-jim crow artifact that is the Electoral College for choosing the President.
In other news, looks like the de-Trumpification of America is taking a good first step: Selling his shlock house hotel in DC to a group that's going to rename it a Waldorf-Astoria.
Looks like the genius businessman never turned a profit on it while he owned it. Imagine, a hotel with choke-a-horse room rates packed with diplomats and the stupidly wealthy not turning a profit.
https://www.rte.ie/news/2021/1115/1259939-trump-washington-hotel/
what are "choke-a-horse room rates"? I've never heard that expression before.
Choke a horse means excessive.
So this means $$$$$$ on the hotel rooms rate.
IIRC other hotels have taken down his name as they know his "brand" is toxic.
Clearly, Trump never heard of the phrase "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt".
Running for the presidency was an awful decision.
Delay is the whole point here - The ploy is to hold out until next November and hope that the GOP retake the house when they will shut down the investigations.
They want these indictments to some extent because they can use them to delay even more with the back and forth on charge/appeal etc. etc.
An Americanism - "Something so hard to swallow it'd choke a horse".
