I came across a factcheck from a Chicago newspaper that corrects this slightly, the police department says it doesn't issue bulletproof vests to any non officers.
However there was a fund-raising scheme held by the PD whereby you could earn credits that could buy things from the department. Rittenhouse must have been pretty successful in his fund raising efforts.

The judge has never taken any nonsense, he has a reputation for that. It strikes me as a laudable trait for a judge.
The follow on question is "why did the nonsense come from one side?" You didn't see the counsel for the defense treading on basic constitutional violations or ambushing the jury, and I defy you to find a qualified legal analyst who says that the State didn't do that.
The reason to my mind is that the defense considers its position so solid that it feels no need to take any risks whilst the State needs to push whatever boundaries it can in order to try to make a case.
If the judge really wanted to rig the case, all he would need to do is grant the motion by the defense for a mistrial with prejudice. He hasn't done so.

It has been this judge's standard policy on all cases, he is being consistent, and it has not been an uncommon position amongst judges as a whole for some decades now. One can find scholarly papers on the subject from the late 1990s and early 2000s. Indeed, there is precedent for an appeals court overturning verdicts because they considered the term overly prejudicial.
I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of their viewers are leftists are just watching Fox and getting mad at everything they say. Outside of folks like Carlson, they coverage has been pretty fair from what I've seen. MSNBC and CNN on the other hand. They've already convicted Rittenhouse. Even their general news coverage is biased. Bringing up a former judge, who is unpopular within her own profession for having a personal blog, to call the Rittenhouse judge biased even though he was appointed by a Democrat. You have black professors and a former congressman saying he is a white supremacist and murdered innocent people. Only a jury gets to decide that. MSNBC had to take down a tweet which used the word murder. You also have Biden posting a tweet about it back in 2020.
Rittenhouse is going to be a rich man if he is found not guilty. So many celebrities and media personalities and the networks themselves will be paying out. His mother has already confirmed that their lawyers are dealing with the Biden tweet and that settlement will be made public because it is taxpayer money.
One is factual. The other is not. Damaging property and setting bins on fire makes you a rioter and arsonist. The jury will decide whether those men were victims or idiots who got what they deserved.
Most black people in America are killed by black men. There is no evidence to show that there is widespread racism or police brutality in America. The police have killed numerous white people but the media doesn't cover that.

You cannot have it both ways. If you are applying that level of legal rigour over whether someone can be called a victim or not then you would need to apply the same level of rigour over whether they can be labelled as those other terms. That's if you want to be consistent about it.
