You're basically asking if something different happened, didn't have a gun, didn't turn up, didn't run into the first attacker, decided to go to a different part of the riots. That none of the subsequent events happened. Well duh.
That kinda implies that anyone with a gun intends to use it. However there loads of people with guns around during these riots. The vast majority didn't use them, many travelled in from elsewhere. You'd have to show clear intent (without the possibility of any doubt) that he intended to use it. The problem you will have then, is that (by their standards) he showed restraint in using it.
