Ah here..... Take off the red glasses
Im sure he is excellent.
But he is hugely inexperienced, and there are other options. Or as there other options?
Im only asking, he is potentially the most inexperienced player in the 23 no need for anyone to be getting their back up and try to turn it into a provincial thing.
He has 25 minutes against japan, and 5 leinster caps. The guy could play a huge part in the game so its a fair question
If it helps, the Indo says Herring will be on the bench.
17 caps for Leinster. Kelleher only has 28.
17, i stand corrected.
But the question is the same. With zero Hcup starts and without a half of international rugby is he possibly in because he is that good, or because we have a lot of injuries?
Kelleher is a fine player, and the connacht hooker is a fine player.
Its sad that you are trying to immaturely turn this into a provincial thing.
Im just asking a question about a player who is possibly on the bench, and could have a massive involvement in a game against NZ in a pivotal position.
If you don't have the wherewithall to see that this isn't a provincial thing then you simply lack basic intelligence.
But he is hugely inexperienced
So?
there are other options
There are other options in every position. How is that an argument not to select a player?
I could say "Why is Furlong starting? There are other options".
You could ask that of furlong, but that would make you look stupid because furlong is widely acknowledged to be the best player in the in world his position, while sheehan isnt acknowledged as the beat player in his position at his club
This week hugely inexperienced is a problem? Did you not spend some of last week arguing about people getting game time with an eye on the future?
How many of the other hookers are 6'3" and 110kg?
Kelleher and Sheehan have clear physical talents no other realistic option has. As well as their high skill levels this dynamism is massively important in modern rugby and the way we want to play.
Exactly, and you asking it of Sheehan makes you look stupid. Because just because a player isn't the best at his club, doesn't mean that he isn't 2nd best for his country. It is entirely possible for a club to have the two best players in a position.
Should Porter not have been on the bench for the last 4 years because he wasn't the best TH at Leinster? Other options were Bealham, Marty Moore and John Ryan.
yea, because we needed to go fully loaded against japan alright.
Well yes we did as we were playing NZ the next week having not played as a unit in months. Also if last week was fully loaded then you are surely acknowledging that fully loaded includes Sheehan on the bench. I suspect that you are just looking for a negative before the team is even named.
No, im just asking why he is now so high up the rankings, is it because of some ability that hasnt been demonstrated in bug games before or are there actually a lot of injuries in that position, or a combination of both.
If i was questioning the inclusion of Carbery would people be getting so defensive.
Out of curiosity, how many games have watched Sheehan play, roughly?
You were told why he is there, you just don’t accept it for whatever reason. He’s the second or third best hooker in Ireland at the moment as seen by the selectors. I’m not sure what your carbery comment is about presumably a deflection to provincialism. Was it you that claimed there was a Leinster bias last week?
Fairly simple, good players are good player. They should be in contention to be in the match day squad.
It is interesting when you see these discussions, one minute people are complaining about Sexton in the team and not giving players "a chance", the next minute you have a player getting "a chance" and they are complaining the player is too inexperienced.
So which is it?
You got it right above; he's been expedited because he's that good.
Selection decisions are often really marginal anyways. It's not some massive slight on Herring.
The 2 Englishmen, the South African-Englishman and the Munster legend have a bias towards Leinster!!!
If it was my decision I would probably go Herring but I see can see why Sheehan is been pushed into the team. Talk to any rugby pundits/ex players and they all rave about Sheehan and what he could potentially offer in the future, most thinking he will pass out Kelleher.
Leaving out the Sexton discussion this squad does seem to have one eye on the WC, Herring was doing some serious warm up etc last week in Aviva so it's not like he is sitting back in the hotel
I think it was on one of the podcast during the week about a gruff man from the North of England has a real bias for South County Dublin players 😂
I thought it was an excellent comment
NZ team in, full strenght
clearly not enough because i haven't formed any opinion on him.
Aaron Smith was unlikely to make it in time so probably their strongest side. They're obviously using this as a warm up for France.
Ioane at 13 I'm happy with. He's miles better on the wing.
Havili and ALB has been their go-to centre pairing this year so I'm surprised they've changed it.
Also surprised they've left Akiria Ioane out.
But he didn't complain about him being there. He asked why he is on the bench, based on potential or current talent, or injuries to others. I have a feeling if a different poster asked the same question they wouldn't have been jumped on in this way.
For me he is there purely on potential, the same as Casey is there on potential. They have both had good games that show they have a high ceiling. But they aren't really playing better then the competition for the spot.
Listening to NZ media and podcasts this week...
they definitely aren't viewing this as a "warm up"
I don't know the poster. Was just answering the question, as I said I see people complain about players in the team because they are "old" and then the next minute complain about a player not having enough experience.
NZ are after Ireland because we beat them the last time in the Aviva, that never sits well with them. This certainly is a game they want to put us back into our box. Nothing about a warm up from the fans anyway and I doubt from the NZ team
There are a few different opinions as to what our first choice team is, but most would agree on 12/13 of the players that are rumored to start this weekend.
There are then a vast variety of opinions as to what team we should pick for friendly games that are against poor opposition, these can all be debated and debated again and again because people see it differently, some take a longer term view that is based around adding depth, gaining experience and developing players some a shorter term view that you play the best team all the time, and prepare for a challenge like NZ by playing your best team and everyone is entitled to an opinion.
Almost all would agree that we have to start our best team against Nz.
So the answer to your question is both.
And the real answer to the question has to be based on the results.
If we beat NZ saturday then Farrell dod everything right, if we lose then he missed an opportunity to give gametime to people who could beat them down the road.
