Jean-Claude Trichet was on a solo run to punish Ireland, if you recall at the time it was reported that the IMF were in favour of a less harsh regime but the european side kicked up a stink and wanted a pound of flesh. Our politicians bowed down to all that.

I guess they don't live in Ireland then... because the Irish debt went down from 124% to about 68% just in line with countries Germany etc...
So out of interest what have people actually learned about managing their finances as a result of going through the experience and how they intend to make sure it will not happen to them again?
Sadly I expect that most people blaming Seanie, David,...... will repeat the experience. In fact some are already building up for the next big blow out.

I think you might be mis-remembering. Anglo bail-out via the guarantee was in 2008. For 2 years after that, because we were broke we had to implement austerity budgets. The bailout by the Troika was in 2010.
I think it's a pretty direct to link the government propping up of Anglo to the government needing to implement austerity budgets, including cutting funding for special needs kids.

Pre-Anglo - Ireland's national debt was 50bn.
After: Ireland's national debt was 200bn. 10 years later it's barely budged.
So yeah, I think most people's grandkids will be paying the price for the events in those years.
Sean Fitzpatrick was only the most visible of all the senior bankers whose recklessness and incompetence lead to the crash. And they were part of an international ethos of banking recklessness. However the Irish banking bust was far worse than in other countries, and in my view the real villains were in the Central Bank, or more particularly in the office of the banking regulator (remember him?)
labels like "crook" and "convicted criminal" are just misleading and distract from any real understanding of what went on.
I was actually selected for the jury on his case, then on the first day I was trun off as I had met one of the junior counsel at a party or something along those lines. Thank f*ck as the case went on for 6 months or something.
