Duty Free Ireland to UK

Hi all, please move if there's a thread somewhere else but I couldn't find it. Does anyone know what the story is with regard to booze and cigarettes in duty free now when travelling from Ireland to UK and back. Im heading to the UK next week and a friend of mine said oh great sure you can get your duty free stuff (Smoker) on the way and the way back now..... Can I??!! thanks

you can get Duty Free both ways BUT the duty free you buy on the way out cannot be reimported.

You can buy as much as you like going out or coming back but if you are over the allowance the goods can be seized and you can be fined.

thanks all. Just never struck me that now on short journey I could pick up cigarettes. So expensive here that it would make a big saving on a very short day return flight, cheers! and sure a bottle or 2 of spirits too....

Yes you are committed to whatever is on the flight, I don't think you can check beforehand what will be in stock for a particular flight either.

I don’t know about cigarettes or beer/wine, but the allowance for spirits both ways is 4 litres.

Yeah, I've noticed a lot of people in the past few weeks flying out on cheap tickets to Gatwick/Stanstead and buying cigarettes on the flight back, all in €55.

Spoke to one lady who has been doing it since the restrictions started. She visits her sister in Crawley town for a few hours between flights.

My uncle asks me to get him 200 regularly as I have to fly for work but more often the return flight is out of his brand by the time they get to me. I bought some on the way over the last time as I was going to be tight making the return flight and had no issue with customs on the way back.

One used to be allowed to reimport it, also RyanAir had a "handy" service, on your return flight, if you had not gotten duty free on the way out, they would sell you your outward and return duty free on the return flight, of course asking you to confirm that you did not get Duty Free in the Airport terminal, so on a weekend trip to London, one could return with six litres of Whiskey, one in each airport, and two on each flight.

Yes the UK have increased their allowance since Brexit, previously they were 1 litre too. If I'm visiting someone over there I will try to bring the max.

Could you book a very cheap flight (<€10) to Liverpool (one way), go to the Duty Free, stock up on fags, "panic" and say you're too scared to take the flight and simply leave with your loot?

I might try. I'm not a smoker but a family member is (a very heavy one at that, ie, 3 packs a day).

Strange. My sister was telling me that she’d brought the Christmas drinks back with her last week. 2 litres each vodka and gin. Surely she wouldn’t have been allowed buy that much if it wasn’t ok? Or would she have been charged the full amount for the extra 3?

I don't that's a "runner"........ coming back from Lanzarote just before the pandemic, bought a stash in airport...... long story short...flight was cancelled at last minute.......everyone had to 'refund' their goodies before leaving airport

Legally, do the fags and alcohol have to be consumed outside the EU or can you buy some in DUB and bring them back in for your own use?

I know you can bring 200 fags, 1 L of strong liquor from outside the EU back into Ireland, but can you bring your Irish Duty Free fags to the UK and back again?

What if you buy 200 in DUB then go to the UK, buy 200 more in LPL on return. You then have 400 entering Ireland, which is a breach of your limit. Do the Irish fags you bought originally in DUB count towards that limit?

Buying it isn't the issue, importing it into the country is. Customs are the ones who would have an issue, but they don't stop everyone

Duty free bought in Ireland and re-imported count towards your allowance. The must not be opened until you are outside the state.
