With all this Shinner flip-flopping, it's going to be very difficult for their supporters to trot out that Enda Kenny quote about property tax from nearly thirty years ago.
Every cloud...
Was that the "major obstacle" to a FF/SF coalition last time too?
SF will hoover up more of the undecideds now on the back of it. Looks like their opponents will have to find a new angle to go at them now, I would have suggested the troubles, but that's been flogged to death already.
It's not SF harping on about the troubles every election 😎
Do you think they'll completely sell out the country and go in to coalition with Fianna Fail?
IMO the average Irish voter will stick with FF/FG unless they go into coalition and behave like FF/FG. That's why SF have seen a rise in support. It's not hate, it's disappointment and lack of viable options.
I don't know...
The Sinn Féin U Turn on the Special Criminal court removes a major obstacle to a SFFF government next time
FF/FG merging to become FFG solely to prevent SF being in govt will do wonders for that "hatred" to recede lol. As for the divided UK/Ireland rule, that's coming to an end in the near future, be rest assured of that one. Even the lambeg drum beating unionists must be disillusioned with how they're being shafted tanks to Brexit. 😂
Absolute trash talk. The most pro choice party is the SDs, they were visible everywhere during the referendum and their numbers increased dramatically after it.
As for the unity of SF, the things that tie SF supporters together are 1) a hatred of FF and FG and 2) a hatred of a divided ireland/uk rule.
General theme there though.
complete nonsense.
sf have simply changed their minds, i disagree with the party but that is something they are entitled to do.
there is no conspiracy here.
no, we can just lobby for the party to change it's mind.
no doubt that is what will be done if there is enough support, which i should think, or at least hope there is .
so i won't be voting for ffg or other similar parties, sf is the one for me regardless of my disagreement with them on the odd issue.
going on their campaigning during the 8th referendum, i have no doubt personally that they are the most pro-choice party in ireland.
there are pro-life non-religious, pro-life catholics, pro-choice people and all sorts of people who support sf, and that is the beauty of the party, it reaches out across all views and all beliefs and individuals, and that is why their base is growing and is going to grow hugely.
We have to give credit to Sinn Fein for making a complete u-turn on the issue. Fair play to their leadership for delivering this change. I wonder if those on here who strongly defended their previous stance will be along to criticise them for their change in approach, or will they follow the new party line?
The only thing about it is that Sinn Fein now even more resemble Haughey's Fianna Fail, where the pursuit of power at the expense of principle trumped everything.
By "accepting it's need", I'm seeing less and less reasons to not finally give them a vote next time out. And for clarity, I'm originally a South Armagh man, who didn't vote them when I still lived at home, and have been voting labour, independent and social democrats while living here (South county Dublin)
A lot of SF critics will probably view this as a curve ball now, how many tweets have the FG Twitter account pumped out now about the SCC and Sinn Fein (and repeated ad nauseam by loyal followers like "Cllr McManus" and Neale Richmond) then again, look at Nigel above for example.... Doesn't know which way the wind is blowing lol.
Beware of Sf PR about the Special Criminal Court. Reading between the lines I would say Sf will support the court when the law is after certain people and will refuse to support the court when it's after certain other people. This is a slippery slope to what Russia and China do on daily basis... {political law enforcement is not law enforcement at all} We need to be very mindfully of what the SF rule makers are up to there.
Lots and lots of SF supporters spent a lot of political capital being against the Special Criminal Court. I guess they will have to support another party now that SF has finally accepted its need.
Therefore they are not the most pro choice party in Ireland, let alone in NI.
It's clear that SF has 3 sets of supporters and one of those set are from NI and have deep-rooted Catholic beliefs who are very pro life.
it will depend on the individual as to whether they believe that to be the case or not but realistically it could actually very much show their pro-choice credentials.
i have no doubt they have good reason for abstaining anyway.
.....one doesn't really demonstrate one's pro-choice credentials very well by abstaining rather than voting against a pro-life bill.
no, it's that they want to aline with ireland rather then britain.
SF are the most pro-choice party in ireland, some would say the only real one and they still remain such regardless of their abstention.
Good call rd, those of us who Know, Know full well that the populist game eventually runs out of rope.

shes dirt
Abstaining on that vote is so pathetically cowardly. Have the courage of your bloody convictions.
I'd be less offended by it if they'd allowed a free vote and some of their MLAs actually voted in favour of the Bill than that absolute cop out.
SF doing what SF most likes to do: abstaining when there is any responsibility to be taken for difficult decisions.
Gone very quiet around here. Shinner posters trying to figure how any positive spin could be put on this piece of shameless hypocrisy?
Louise O'Reilly had a go at explaining SF vote (or lack thereof).

No, I can't understand her point either.
The Sinn Fein party is not as pro-choice as it pretends.
How big a problem do you think people thinking the state owes them a house is? Seems to me the problem is a lot people not being able to buy or rent. How do you account for the working people who don't qualify for a 'free house' but end up homeless or couch surfing? Before the crash and following austerity came in, hotel use for emergency accommodation was a rarity, now it's part of the system. That's poor governing, not an attitude problem. Do you thing ten or twenty years ago we had nobody thinking the state owed them?
Do you honestly believe if everyone changed there attitude we'd have little to no problems?
SF NI trying to pander to the Aontu wing again?
I don’t think that any Party can sort the housing issue. It’s more a societal issue. Some People believe that they are entitled to a home provided by the State rather than sourcing and funding it for themselves. Until this attude changes, we’ll have people living in hubs and hotels/B&Bs.
So SF never claimed they'd 'solve' housing. Moving swiftly along I see.
You keep peddling the lie that I expect any party to solve or fix all the FF/FG problems or make things perfect, so then you can crow on about how unlikely that is like it wasn't you made it up.
I have to hold my hand up. You got me good. I do revert back to talking about what I don't like about the housing strategy when pointing out what I don't like about the housing strategy. You got me bang to rights. Good man 😥
As regards the part of the plan you don't like, does that make you part shinner? That's the accusation critics usually get around these parts.
Can we talk about what you like about it, (school me) and what you think SF will do different or wrong regarding housing?
What's the good points of the housing plan?
Ah, like clockwork you revert to type and bring up one point in the overall housing plan as a way to throw the whole thing out. See what you have done there?
So, the shared equity thing, I don't agree with it and it's in the plan.
In your world that means the entire plan, hundreds of pages worth of a housing policy is thrown out and is no good because of that one thing.
Again, letting the perfect get in the way of the good.
You are welcome. :)
