In past years it was a cup or something if memory serves. Like a lot of advent calendars (except maybe the beauty ones) they are often not great value when you add up the value of the contents but it is the novelty value.

I got my daughter a make up one. Think it was from Argos. She's not into make up but still loved to build up a small kit and try them out on her little sister
Tricky as Crayola and Smiggle etc are probably too young for that age.
We get the lego Star Wars one every year - but each year they get lighter on the minifigs - looks like just 4 1/2 this year (and we already have 3 of them) as opposed to Marvel 8 or 9 minifigs :/
