How much has the site tanked...

...in terms of numbers? What is the drop off in posts and traffic (if that's the right word!). It's very noticeable on some forums, but I've yet to see any analysis, none of us know if numbers are dwindling or improving.

I've criticised the State of the Site thread elsewhere. And I still think it's a bad idea, because sending Niamh out once a week to say "yaaay, the timestamp is now fixed on PCs" just doesn't cut it. It actually suggests a failure to grasp the frustration of many and highlights how slow and ineffective the repairs are.

So how about a real State of the Site thread, with info about how much the site has lost in terms of visitors, posts, engagement. And what's the plan for recovery, beyond "yaaaay, it's taken 4 months but the timestamp is now working"

If I recall from the old site there's typically around 500 users or so on boards at a given time;

r/Ireland having about 2 to 2.5 k users at a given time.

But in total who knows?

Like you couldn't discuss Alec Baldwin there just because you wanted to talk to Irish people about it. But then again you can't discuss Alec Baldwin on boards.ie either because the thread is locked due to posters speculating.

r/Ireland isn't really a "community" platform, Reddit in general isn't intended to facilitate that.

But strictly eyes on screens, I'm curious as to how boards stacks up against a typical viewership of 2 to 2.5 k.

This is very true, however I now spend far more time on reddit these days, I only use boards when on a desktop, I've given up entirely on the mobile site. Its such a shame, but I honestly can't see the site surviving 12 months if it doesn't get its daily active users up and gets post frequency up dramatically.

It depends on the time of day or night that you are online but 500 would be very low during the day. Right now (5.20pm on a Tuesday) Google Analytics tells me there are 2.9k people online. It would obviously go up and down at different times of the day and days of the week.

People have been saying this about Boards for years. It's always pulled through and will this time. The new site is **** dreadful though. They should look at G***.ie (stars mine as I don't think we can mention the site) and relise that is what boards should be. Even posting this, I have no idea how to bold, italic my words. It used to be so easy. Even notifications are awful.

But it will survive.

losing boards would be a sad day. It’s totally Irish, getting to be part of the Reddit subforum isn’t the same thing. And you are right - here we can get an Irish view on foreign news, on sports, on movies. Over there that’s their own forum.

The modding is a separate issue.

The unevenness of modding is awful, it's as if there is no clear guidelines operating across the site, one mod will hand down a few months for calling a public figure a clown, others wouldn't even look at that, they seem a bit lost on whether to snip a comment or simply ban straight away etc.

But this thread was really how much has the site lost in terms of participation, numbers and engagement

I simply don't understand the rule. Every site in the world except boards.ie lets you talk about a major film star start accidentally killing a person on set.

What does speculation even mean. It isn't defamation. If speculation weren't allowed, how would crimes get solved. It's absurd.

I assume they generally they don't allow discussions where there is likely to be or is a legal case pending. I assume because it caused issues in the past. So now its a blanket rule. Might be less relevant in this case. But no exceptions for a blanket rule. Easier to moderate, which is fair enough.
