Limerick improvement projects

This is a thread for discussion on projects that have already been proposed. It isn't a thread for discussing new ideas for the city. We already have enough of those. It is also not a place to engage in council/goverment bashing. It's just a thread where people can let the rest of us know if there is any movement on some projects.

So does anyone have any info on this list of projects;

Inner Orbital Route.
Announced to much fanfare 3 years ago, as far as I know the only thing that happened was the reorganistaion of the junction at the top of Upper William Street. They were waiting on the tunnel to open before they could proceed any further.

Supposed to close the street between Roches St. and William St.

Quays redevelopment.
Announced last year that funding had been secured for new boardwalks etc. on the quays.

King Johns Castle redevelopment
Again it was announced last year that the castle was to get a total revamp, funding was secured but no drawings ever emerged of what the final plan would look like.

New library
The council announced that the existing library was unsuitable abd that they were searching for a new location. Everywhere from a new build on the Potato Market to the conversion of the Jesuits Church at the Crescent or the Franciscan Church at Henry St. was mentioned but then all talk went quiet.

New courthouse
Announced as part of the governments stimulous programme.

New home for Limerick Museum
Due to the castle revemp, the museum has to be moved. It was agreed that a temporary location should be the former bank building on the corner of Patrick St. and Ellen St.

New Limerick maternity hospital
This was never given the go-ahead but for years it has been reported that the maternity hospital was overcrowded. I remember reading somewhere that a site has been earmarked at the regional for a new hospital but there's nothing official as of yet.

There was a meeting in the art gallery if I'm not mistaken a few months ago to investigate the feasibility of setting up a Limerick public bike scheme. Was anybody there?

That wasn't always the plan. The LDA are coordinating the masterplan but it was never clear who was going to be implementing it. It actually might send them back to the drawing board if they don't need to get the agreement of the other bodies anymore

The council have been awarded €750,000 to develop permanent outdoor dining facilities in the city. There doesn't seem to be any offical word on what it's to be spent on, but I assume it will be used on the kiosks on Thomas St. that are in planning.

I doubt that'll cost €750,000 though.

Was just coming on here after reading an article to see if anyone knew anything about it. The list in The Journal seems to give specific streets in a lot of places but just a generic "Limerick City" for Limerick. Is this seperate to the "multi-million" plan the Leader had a few months back for Bedford Row and Thomas St.?

As much as I think personally that it sounds dumb stuff like this does end up working in an Instagramable tourist sense.

My big worry is if it's permanent are the arts council gonna fund fixing and cleaning it for years to come or do we end up with a non rotating triangle of bird mess

Maybe I'm missing something here but when did did university's and colleges take responsibility for providing "affordable housing" to students ??

I will admit its been a while but eons ago when I was a student 90% if student's stayed in digs, shared crappy houses or bedsits. On campus accommodation was expensive, used by foreign students Or wealthier first years. Universities lucky enough to have external funding built more student accommodation as a revenue generating investment, not out of any obligation to provide affordable accommodation..

Only one station out that side of town is close to useless. What happens when the station has no space to dock your bike, go back into Clancy Strand?

That's good but still it's a 10/15 min delay if you have to head back to Thomondgate to dock the bike and then walk back to LIT. One near Thomond Park/Mayorstone Garda station would make some sense.

I had a yearly membership but with no great expansion of the scheme and very poor maintenance of the bikes I gave it up a year or so ago but with new stations coming on board I might take it up again

I use the bikes to get to Thomond Park for matches, I generally leave the bike at the Curraghgower, I check the app before leaving. It tells you how many free spaces there are at each station. The kiosk at the stations also have that feature. If you use it right it's very easy to not get caught out like that.

The housing market has probably changed a lot since then. When I went finding a room in shared accommodation was pretty easy and you also had single room bedsits which are now illegal (might still exist a bit). The sellers market has made landlords a lot more snotty about students too.

10 to 20 years ago I can't remember anyone talking about themselves or friends having to drop out over accommodation but heard it from plenty recently which is why colleges had to step in I imagine

Depends on how big the LIT one is and if there is room to add more.

It also gives the option to maybe cycle home but bus in if you are worried about parking. Personally though I think if you know you are gonna commute by bike most days just buy one. A proper fitting bike will do you much better than those big yokes on the long run

I've used the App but that's only accurate for the time you check, it could fill while on transit. Also, initially at least, faulty docking ports were marked as available for parking on the App though I think that was resolved.

Thats because every single application to build student accommodation is objected to, delayed or cancelled limiting availability (driving up prices). Plus the minimum legal standards keep increasing, driving up costs and price..

Not getting at you but I find it equal parts frustrating and funny that the same people (and politicians) objecting to student accommodation and shared living spaces are the ones shouting loudest about the lack of student accommodation..

It wasn't in the LSMATS Draft but that was widely panned and sent back to the drawing board. The NDP says that the details of this rail plan will be included in the LSMATS
