Well this is it. It's probably the more diverse British cabinet in history at the moment. The 3 most senior cabinet positions, aside from PM, are held by non white people.
There was a very good article in the Guardian earlier this year and i think he captures the present situation nicely.
But that does not stop them from being racist.
One of them offered to starve out the Irish people - she comes across as very racist.
Sunak, Patel and ?
Liz Truss (Foreign Sec, one of the '4 great offices of state') strikes me as being very white.
she didn't though. She made some pretty stupid comments, but the starving the Irish thing is something was invented in the Irish media.
A woman of Bengali descent should know better than to say things like that in fairness.
I'm not sure what her being of Bengali descent has to do with it. Her words were:
“This paper appears to show the government were well aware Ireland will face significant issues in a no-deal scenario. Why hasn’t this point been pressed home during negotiations? There is still time to go back to Brussels and get a better deal.”
The funny thing is, there were a lot of people on this forum also calling for a "Hard Brexit" which would have had the same net effect.
Oh yes I was getting mixed up with Sajid David who became Health Secretary recently, another very senior cabinet position.
She didn't say this.
While she didn't explicitly say that she was in favour of "starving Ireland", she definitely was being abrasive (at the very least) about using the elimination of Britain as a land bridge between Ireland and the continent and thus making imports (including food) more difficult. It was that very clear threat that she wished to use in order to get a "better deal" with the EU and to bend the arm of those regarding the "backstop".
The Bengal famine is still within living memory.
There was a reduction in food availability and inflation. But then there was hoarding and speculation and several million people died because the poor and vulnerable were abandoned in favour of those whom the govt had a vested interest in.
The big difference now is that being poor in Brexit UK means you won't starve to death. Because there's lots of food banks
thanks for the history lesson. It was largely caused by the staple food supply being disrupted local merchants exploiting people to make money.
I still don't see how it is relevant, Priti Patel didn't say anything about starving the Irish.
I see the Unionists has all banded together for their traditional ritual of shooting themselves in the foot. All uniting to oppose the Protocol.
Are they all idiots or do they really want the some of those empty shelves and petrol queues for themselves?
The use of the term starve was an Irish hysterical reaction.
Yes, so uniquely Irish it was the headline for the English Times. I do enjoy watching this lovely game of semantics though.
Well wherever it originally came from, a lot of Irish people were happy to leap on the phrase starve.
It wasn't only the Irish who took Pritel's threat that way. Plenty in Britain also knew what she was on about. And while "starve" was over egging the pudding, it was very clear that she was using the threat of making imports to Ireland more difficult as leverage in Brexit negotiations.
Right.
I think this debate is done by now.
Can Labour not attract high class talented politicians anymore?
Seen as you`ve brought the Bengal famine up:an army marches on its stomach.During that time period Britain was fighting for its life, alongside allies securing victory in North Africa, invading Italy and fighting Japan alongside Indian and Gurkha troops.
They are upset that their full fridges and petrol tanks are making them look too much like the Paddys.
"I'm British but my cars are Irish"
All four main Unionist parties have now allied to fight the Brexit protocol. The threat to pull the rug out from under Stormont is moot since the ministers would remain in their jobs for 28 weeks which takes us close to the next election date. Pure optics that could massively backfire.
On the other hand if they completely scupper Stormont then Westminster takes over which means the DUP veto is gone and things like "power sharing" and "border poll" may happen.
Labours problem is that while Starmer is dull but likely competent an awful lot of the party activists, local reps are ranging up to complete lunacy in the eyes of the electorate.
It also has very few MPs that look capable or credible and many who are viewed as cranks.
People genuinely fear that the crazy wing of labour will ride roughshod over them if the party comes to power.
You may not agree with that but surely we all agree that Labour have no chance next election, the Gap is too big to close in one.
2029 or 2034 are the real targets.
There are further cracks developing in labours base. The working class will continue to desert them, the Middle class progressives, where labour draws so many of its activists from is being drawn to the Greens and there is a real possibility of the Muslim vote fracturing off in key places.
Also the reform if boundaries to reflect current demographics is going to hit Labour who benefited from the discrepancies.
Would you have had extensive dealings with these activists and reps around the country.
Also there is a such thing as a working class progressive too and its substantial which is why all the working class parts of London and the other urban centres vote in massive numbers for Labour. Unless of course you buy the Farage BS that everyone inside the M25 is part of some yuppie liberal elite.
I also don't believe that people will vote green if there is a real sniff of being able to beat the Tories.
To be honest it sounds like you are just dealing in lazy generalizations
What's your point?
So after saying the military will not be mobilised to try and ease the fuel crisis it turns out they will be mobilised in a move that sees absolutely nobody surprised.
Keir Starmer: "My dad was a toolmaker. and in a way Boris Johnsons dad was a toolmaker too." LOL
Funniest political line ever.
Missed that, and I suppose it's the way you tell em, but reading it it comes across like cheap dig, that I bet he wouldn't even be able to come up with himself. Well at least he didn't call him Tory scum.
That Iraqi general comes to mind.
I notice it is being referred to as the "reserve tanker fleet" to avoid mention of the army. Also being stressed is that they are driven by civilians but where have all these HGV licensed civilians suddenly popped out of
Well they did send out nearly a million letters to HGV license holders begging them to save Christmas and by extension Boris' neck.
There's no shortage HGV drivers. Just a shortage of those willing to back into the industry.
Besides it's all PR as it's nowhere near enough tankers to make a real difference - it will also draw on some of the reserve fleet of 80 tankers which the government keeps for emergencies.
Actually think Burnham should be leader, definitely has something about him and just much more charismatic than Keir.
People initially tried to compare Biden to Starmer and that was fanciful. No matter your opinion on Biden politics he has immense charisma and has that everyman touch which Keir doesn't. It should not matter in a perfect world, but it does sadly. Burham FTW.
