Very good post. I see exactly what you mean, and I agree with you. It's like far away hills are green, and people think that because someone has a good reputation within the GAA circles or was a good player, that they will walk in and revolutionise Mayo GAA.
I think a lot of it stemming from the Horan-O'Shea factor in the final, where many people feel that Horan was too stubborn to take Aidan off in the final (I think Horan has some Breaffy connection, but cannot remember what, Maybe work??). And it's fairly well know that he may have his favourites, and if you get on his wrong side for whatever reason, you're goosed. So I think a lot of people are proposing the "outsider" appointment on the basis that the internal politics will evaporate.
But sometimes, better the devil you know.
Very sad news.
Paddy Prendergast has passed away.
Its sad that some people are making fun of this. Not on here.
There will be a selection of clowns telling us that Mayo people will be delighted.
We won't.
It's very sad for all us Mayo people that we have not been able to see him with the cup after Mayo winning it.
RIP :-(
Read a few articles online from various sources and each one of them heavily features the Curse.... absolutely pathetic and very disrespectful to his family imho
My thoughts exactly. Shows you how stupid some people really are.
His passing is sad first and foremost for his family. Our sympathy has to go to them. It is also sad for the Mayo GAA family as we have lost the last of our footballing giants.
And Thursday was the 70th anniversary of the last win, remarkable. RIP.
Seems the key attribute of a successful manager from outside the county is to manage Offaly
With the news over the last number of days I for one am going to smack down a whopping wager on Mayo for Sam 2022
They are practically dead certs to finally lift the cup after a 71 year wait
Hilarious
RIP Paddy Prendergast, a GAA legend
The amount of people already today at work who have commented that "ye must be looking forward to next year now that yer man is dead" or something similar. The common theme that they think we were all hanging on an imaginary "curse" invented long after the alleged incident, and that they are so original in being the first to make this comment. And not one of them actually knowing Paddy's name...
You forgot Mick O'Dwyer (Kildare, Laois) Paudi O'Se (Westmeath), Kieraan McGeeney (Kildare) Davy Fitz (Wexford) Anthony Daly (Dublin), Tommy Lyons (Offaly) and that's in a situation where outside managers are rare in both hurling and gaelic football.
Outside managers have a mixed record, good and bad, no more than inside managers.
If there is a better candidate outside the county than inside, then of course they should be tried. Its rarely the case but occassionally it does happen where you have an external applicant far more qualified.
I think the point fanofconnacht was making was, no player should ever again be picked for Mayo based on reputation and its the kind of sh*te that's always happened in Mayo. A player played a few blinders against Sligo, Leitrim or London a few years ago and becames an automatic first choice for the rest of his career or had one half of a good game against Dublin or Kerry.
Certain players can be invisible for 65 minutes, makes a few key interventions and then they are called legends, whereas the players who have been consistent over the 70 minutes in a low profile way are ignored.
Mayo need to prioritise finding 3-4 scoring forwards who can each score 3-4 points in big games if required. They need to find 2-3 6ft4/5 inch midfielders who can bully all around them (we don't have that).
And another goalie as competition for Hennelly (who by the way has improved and played a huge part in getting us to the final).
still though, if mayo do lift the cup next year people will think it very strange.
There isn't a hope of Mayo lifting the cup next year, largely because we don't have a team anywhere near the stature and character of the 50/51 team who went out there and grabbed their few AI final opportunities with both hands.
That Mayo team reached 3 finals, 48, 50 and 51. They won 2 and were blatantly robbed of the third. They were a great team, not just for Mayo but in the history of Gaelic football. Probably could have won a couple more AIs but for injuries and immigration.
They have a grand total of Zero All Irelands as external managers. Grand total of 5 managers from outside have won all irelands in modern history, hurling and football, 4 with Offaly. And as shown by your list of excellent coaches, external coaches cannot do it without the players.
There is a great belief that everytime we haven't won it is because the manager has got it wrong. That there are better players elsewhere. Lots on here questioning all the Ballintubber, Breaffy and Westport players in the squad. Yet those 3 go out at the weekend and win easy
I mentioned this way back before the 2013 final.
At some point in the game do some of the Mayo players (individually) come to the conclusion that losing the final is not that big a deal ?
If you think about it, losing a final is not unique to the guys who played on Sept 11th 2021, nor to they guys in Dec 2020, or 2017 etc etc
If, as a Mayo player you lose an All Ireland final, you don't stand out from the crowd.
So with the game slipping away from you, and you trying to get more out of your body and mind, does the Mayo player come to the conclusion that "so what, it's just another final, I've given plenty already this year, it's not my day".
I think it does, I think that pain of loss is dulled by the frequency of that loss.
And I'm not criticizing a player for felling that way in the end, it's natural I'd say
We as fans are the same, you lose you just shrug your shoulders and move on, it's annoying and frustrating but it's no different from the last one, or the one 25 years ago.
What needs to happen is that they need to see that winning it is just so so much better than losing again.
How that can be achieved I've no idea.
As you know success is relative. A county like Leitrim or Westmeath winning a provincial title is the equivalent of a bigger county winning an AI.
In any case, there's probably more wrong with Mayo football than just a manager change, but having a manager who knows what they are doing on AI Final day would be a help and we haven't had one of those managers since 1951. The gene pool of tactically able managers in Mayo is shallow as we've seen.
Do you even know what the management structure was like in 50 and 51? The team was selected by committee and the players had to make The best of it. It was the players that pulled them through. In 1950 a goalkeeper was selected from nowhere and after conceding a early goal Sean Flanagan basically had to tell him to get “injured” to get Wynne back on
Great line here by John Forgaty in The Irish Examiner
"How Prendergast’s passing is somehow seen as a release for Mayo is as distasteful as some of the comments aimed at Hennelly five years ago and O’Shea now."
it seems likely the season ticket will come back for 2022.
I wonder how this is going to work for the league with Machale park out of action?
I heard it was likely our home league matches may be played in Tuam,Roscommon or Sligo.
Interesting,id happily take Tuam or sligo, whichever has the bigger pitch.
As a rule i try to spend as little time as possible in roscommon.
Has there been an email yet or anything official?
I think i saw something on another thread last month, thats all im going off.
Speaking of emails,i believe if youre a season ticket holder and bought a tile you would get Mayo Gaa Tv free for the year which is a nice gesture.I havent got the email though.
Can you name any player that had blinders against Sligo, Leitrim or London and has become an automatic first choice selection on the team from that? Regardless of their other performances.
I can't.
Just throwing this out there. I think Conor O'Shea should be given a chance at midfield for Mayo. He's has played consistently well for Breaffy over the years, yet any time I see him play for Mayo, he is thrown into the half forward line. Completely different roles. It was different when we had an abundance of big midfielders to choose from - 2 x O'Sheas, Vaughan, Jason Gibbons, Barry Moran etc. But now we don't. I don't mean to pick on Conor Loftus, but I don't think he is cut out for a midfield role at the top level. Very good forward player on his day alright, but lacks pace and a bit of aggression in the modern game to nail down a forward role. I think if Conor O'Shea was in the middle, with a little more space that a midfielder generally gets that a forward doesn't, he would have more of an influential role. I know it's not our complete saving grace, but every little helps.
