Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Schedule

    FP1 Fri, 24 Sept 09:30

    FP2 Fri, 24 Sept 13:00

    FP3 Sat, 25 Sept 10:00

    QU Sat, 25 Sept 13:00

    Race Sun, 26 Sept 13:00

So yeah Russia . can't say I'm a fan . Leclerc gets the Ferrari Engine up date so that interesting and also Mercedes and Redbull might play engine penalties roulette , that might be fun too , having Those three at the back of the grid might make it fun .

Looks like a wet quali and a dry race, the other way around would be more interesting. Is Leclerc definitely starting at the back?

The rain there right now is bonkers, Spa 2.0 on the way...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,249 ✭✭✭✭flazio

I remain confident that Sochi has a better chance to get a wet race going then Spa.

Bottas must be a rare favourite for the win surely?

For the year that's in it an exciting Sochi GP might not be beyond the realms of possibility with what's happened already.

I think a wet quali giving us a bit of a shaken up grid for Sunday could be a good spectacle, even more so of Max takes a new power unit and starts at the bank with Leclerc.

I can’t stand listening to Hill. Still banging the drum about the crash in Italy.

When Hamilton left a wheel in at Silverstone his response was “we want to see close hard racing”.

I wouldn’t mind nearly as much if I disagreed but he was consistent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,187 ✭✭✭McFly85

So looks like it could be relatively dry on Sunday-be interesting to see what RB decide.

I think the only way they don’t take the penalty is if they start inside the top 5, or they get incredibly lucky and Hamilton crashes out of quali.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,887 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

From the sounds of it, it will be a wet qualy. So strategies for the race will be interesting.

All new PU for Max, starts last.

    Makes sense.

This may be relevant if the weather goes as currently predicted and Qualifaction cannot take places , these are the times they will use ...........I probably wont go that way but they insisted on repeating it a number of time during the coverage .

It's just dawned on me that they have both F2 and F3 as support races this weekend. That's 6 races to fit in, the schedule for Saturday is packed, any rain delays will wreak havoc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,773 ✭✭✭SureYWouldntYa

It's such a flat circuit too, I wonder what the drainage is like

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,903 ✭✭✭Joeface

They brought the F3 race forward to today to free up some schedule time tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,268 ✭✭✭✭MadYaker

Verstappen is taking the new engine so him and Leclerc will be starting from the back. Might make it interesting. How do they decide who starts dead last? Will it depend on quali? Leclerc's Ferrari looks quick in practice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,814 ✭✭✭Captain_Crash

The penalties are added up! Max already has the 3 place pen along with the engine penalty, so if he qualifies 1st and then has a theoretical 23 place grid pen and Le Clerc qualifies 2nd and has a 20 place grid pen then Le Clerc will start 19th and Max 20th. I think it’s 5 places for the engine and additional places for other parts which can be added also! (Like Bottas two weeks ago) so it also depends on how many penalties they each took to begin with vs where each of them qualify.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,187 ✭✭✭McFly85

So if Max is going to start from the back, would it not just suit him to skip quali/do a handy lap and go out in Q1 to preserve tyres for the race?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,249 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Still has to do a 108% lap of pole doesn't he?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,547 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

True (used to be 107% but might have changed) bit they could do that no bother. There's tolerance of over 6 seconds with a 91 second lap. And the difference between the fastest and slowest quali lap last year was about 4 seconds.

So if max wants to do a lap thst is within the allowed time and still is eliminated in q1, they could do it without issue. I don't think it's Max's brand to take the easy option. But we'll see what he does tomorrow.

The forum doesn't automatically embed tweets anymore.

Anyway the upshot is that F2 was postponed due to the weather.

i really hope quali goes ahead today but what I saw on sky F1 didn’t fill me with massive confidence but Sochi isn’t spa so that’s where my hope is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,903 ✭✭✭Joeface

Yeah, they said they would try run it tomorrow before the race if it doesn't go ahead today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,338 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Looks like qualifying will go ahead which is good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,338 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

As I said that Michael masi including all manner of caveats and contingencies. They have a window it seems and need to get going.

Craig slater with some leading questions imo.

well that was a bit too close for comfort.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,338 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

And as Paul “mejum” Diresta said that pit lane entrance wasn’t built with wet weather in mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,467 ✭✭✭h3000

I know the stewarts normally have discretion but is Max obliged to set a time within 107%?

I’m not too up on F1 rules. More or a rally and MotoGP guy.

Williams looking racey. Also would be cool if Seb can take advantage of the conditions in the AM.

Track now drying so the Mercs I think are untouchable. Front row lockout likely. Hopefully Bottas in P1. Red Bull need Checco to be right behind them and ready to pounce.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,884 ✭✭✭Hijpo

Didn't someone get a drive in F2 a couple of years ago without setting a 107% lap??

    It does say

"Stewards may subsequently allow a car to start if they believe a driver was prevented from setting a <107% time by special circumstances."

Could he be in trouble because they didn't bother rather than be prevented?

That’s where my question was coming from. He didn’t even try to set a timed lap.

In saying all that Red Bull probably know more than I do 😄

    Slicks for Q3?

  • Registered Users Posts: 890 ✭✭✭seamusk84

    Time for drys?

Need to be careful though as anyone can spin and bring out the flags on the final run.....

Isn't there a thing that if you set a time within 107% at some point in the weekend you're allowed in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,338 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

Did David Croft mean next year not next week when he was talking about George Russell driving for Mercedes ?

The fact Russell wasn't much faster on a fresh set makes me think it's time. No one trying in Q2 though. Could've been a good gamble for Williams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,338 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

That was my understanding that if you don’t set a time in qualifying, that they’ll look at the weekend as a whole and max would be well within that mark.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,884 ✭✭✭Hijpo

    It was Deledda at Monaco.

"So with regards to Deledda and the F2 race, the stewards, having spoken with them, had a look or had two parts,” said Masi.

“They’ve obviously summoned the team and the team displayed to them that they had been having mechanical issues with that car throughout the weekend.

“In addition to that they had a look at Deledda’s participation at the previous event, which he fulfilled all of the criteria. And on that basis they allowed him to start at the back of the grid, which is within the discretion that they have as stewards."

So it would seem to come down to whether they care that he didn't bother trying to set the lap. Leclerc has done it correctly. I wonder will anyone bring it to the attention of the stewards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,467 ✭✭✭h3000

Quite possibly, I’m really not sure.

I would have thought that you’d have to at least try to qualify if your car was working.

That’s good because I was wondering had a time travelled. Murray walkers mistakes were endearing and part of his commentary whereas David Croft just seems to make mistakes.

  • Registered Users Posts: 890 ✭✭✭seamusk84

That's fast from Alonso....I think they have to go drys for Q3. That track is really evolving.

He's gotten a lot worse this season I think. Or maybe it was just Rosberg calling him on mistakes that makes it seem like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,030 ✭✭✭✭Jordan 199

Alonso is looking good so far.
