La Palma, Spain, eruption has started.
Footage of when it first went off
No stopping that.
Live footage of La Palma.
LIVE: La Palma Volcano Eruption on the Canary Islands - YouTube
Lava being propelled many hundreds of meters into the air.
tempting myself again, flights coming in at around 400 in total to get to the island
Pics are fantastic.
What are the odds on tsunami now? :) it IS 2021, in fairness..
Thinking of all the local people especially the children of El ParΓso and the other 2 villages, who have lost up to 300 homes and livelihoods ....and the firefighters and others who have been evacuating them and rescuing pets and wild animals...
May you all be encircled safely within compassionate arms at this time.
What is the effect (or might be) of this eruption on the air quality? Might there be a concern with flying and particles getting into engines... such as grounded flights 11 yrs ago with the icelandic Volcano that affected Europe. When Mt Etna in Sicily spews forth the air in nearby town is nasty... is it sulphur smell? thinking of the holidaymakers in the nearby islands.
Looks like Mt Etna has blown this afternoon
I think Etna grumbles away sporadically.
Jeez! Two volcanos in (political not continental) Europe on the go! I fear an Orion thread incoming that it's weather or time related or both!!! π
Slowly but surely transforming the landscape:
Man will always be subject to nature.
3 European volcanos on the go. Etna, Ragnar and now La Palma.
HAARP
Felt I was in the wild west half way through watching this unusual volcano update!
Same local going through a map of island earlier.
And his update tonight ..imagine trying to sleep with that thunder sound from the volcano going off all night !
Wishing him and his family well....
Nice view of that old lava stream on Google Maps here
Google Maps
I hear that if CO2 levels get to be much more - even though they are near the lowest levels they have ever been in the Earth's geological history - the Sun will turn into a red giant and then implode and go supernova - billions of years ahead of schedule.
I think we could do with a couple of Pinatubos - preferably not near where anyone lives - to cool the planet and the climate change rhetoric.
I do wonder what effect (if any) the volcanos will have on our winter weather.
I was just thinking the same.

Here's a link to a live webcam.
Now 10 vents
geologist answer ?..highly unlikely
6000 evacuated yesterday
some people allowed back during short window of volcano quietning/lava speed slowing to collect belongings
Second half...Great compassionate grounded overview of different perspectives of the situation and how it effects different people...
General update and information on how locals are being helped and one social media issue which has upset them.
Info on air quality locally and what steps to take especially when lava hits sea.
Mods..and other posters...maybe this thread should be split where the posts on la palma started a couple days ago into a seperate thread? Or not? or title expanded to include La Palma?
It seems this eruption will be on going for a while.
Huge explosive sounds coming from La palma volcano currently:
π LIVE: La Palma Volcano Eruption on the Canary Islands (Feed 2) - YouTube
Terrifying sounds to be honest.
New vent and fissures have opened up along with a significant increase in activity.
All after they said that it was stabilising
its an incredible feeling when close to these things, ive tried to capture the sounds before, but its very difficult to, it truly is terrifying, the power is audible
Live youtube feeds looks to be frozen....Technical glitch? Edit, back now
A more stable cam here, but located at quite a distance. Still great for watching ash/gas plumes and you can still hear the booms of the explosions, which give you just an idea how loud and terrifying they must be closer to the volcano.
DIRECTO: El volcΓ‘n de La Palma en fase explosiva extrema - YouTube
The new fissure/vent is quite active already with small landslides associated with it.
