The hygiene argument had a basis but that was about the bottling at the pub (which was occasionally an utter disaster) rather than the type of cap. Claiming it was the cap gave cover to the change rather than admitting that some pubs were bottling in rats nests (and yes, Guinness also wanted to keep control and margins for themselves)
1959 but wouldn't have been instant everywhere.
SuperValues in North Kildare are starting to stock them today.
Thats fantastic, Guinness bolloxology is as old as the hills.
It has to be a result of the Guinness monopoly driving all the competition out of the market and all the wacky mad-aul-fella pub-talk myths ending up being about a single beer.
Just had two of the nitro serge Guinness. Think I'll still be going to the pub for pints. Its definitely creamier but still a can of Guinness
Watch Diageo release a retro bottle of Guinness with a cork any week now...
And some people still prefer the pint bottle to draught 😎
Quite a lot of Waterford for starters.
Question! When your pouring do you hold in the button or do you press it once and leave it?
Seen a video where he held in the button and it says nothing on the can or the instructions about doing that.
Tried one tonight and I didn't get that surge when pouring? So should I of held the button? lol.
You just press the button once, so the light comes on.
Tried it a second time I didn't realise the first time that the nozzle wasn't turned to the lock position!! This time around the surge was there and got a much better pint. The only issue was some bubbles on the top of the head after the first pour but they passed after a while. Im not a regular Guinness drinker but compared to getting a decent one in the pub it's fairly good alright! Million times better than the 0.0 cans that's for sure!
Had a good test drive this evening, well worth the price tag.
Head stuck to the glass the whole way down (wasn't hard for the first pint, 2 gulps) I've had worse pints in "good" Guinness pubs
Got one and yeah it makes the drink look pretty but feel like a bit of an eejit now for spending 40 quid on 6 cans.
40 for 6 is about the price of Wylam Brewery cans in Ireland, so its not unheard of!
Does it actually taste so much better than a can with a widget? If not then I'll stick with them.
You won't beat a good pub Pint no matter what they do.
It does, much better texture.
It certainly beaten some pub pints I've had.
€6.6666667 a can.. It's a tough buy. The units are far too high priced. They are just a little stronger than the bottle top ones (for cans) that they were selling cheap on aliexpress or other China sites. Or giving away free in Glasnevin when a slab was bought. Guinness definitely looking to get their cut of peoples covid savings. I think I'll wait for the inevitable price drop of the can topper things.
It's €15 for 6 cans, 2.50 a can isn't bad for a decent pint.
At the start I’d agree the head is a bit different, has that denser pub head. Not sure I’d notice any difference after that.
i must enlist the help of the lovely Debbie to setup a blind taste test vs. the Guinness classic cans.
Anyone spotted these around North Dublin? Tried a few places when passing by but no joy yet.
Picked one up in Dunnes Portmarnock last night. Still plenty of them there. Might head over and get a few more cans before they're gone.
Supervalu in Sutton have them https://twitter.com/SuperValuSutton/status/1438487323398782977?s=20
Anyone got any idea where I can find them in Newbridge/Kildare? Tried a couple of places yesterday but no joy!
Supervalu Killester have them hidden under the counter! You have to ask, they say that they're selling quickly.
Tesco in naas, the small one on the blessington road had them yesterday.
Just picked mine up from the storehouse, for an extra one too and they said they'd a few left, think it's open till 7.
Cheers, that's actually where I got mine earlier!
Speaking to a chap today who works in my local O'Briens. He tells me the reason for Diageo introducing the Surger cans into the south of Ireland is down to a lack of widgets! Or an attempt by Diageo to reduce the use of widgets. Maybe it's a plastic/enviromental issue.
Not quite sure how to take that. I'm inclined to think it's more of a marketing strategy and to hell with the enviroment! Why weren't these released during lockdown when pubs were closed and people could have benefited more from them while stuck at home?
I've always suspected the LVA didn't want these available to the masses in case they got a liking for them and wouldn't return to the pub. But now that the pubs are more or less fully open.. go ahead and release them! Easy to pass this theory of as 'tin foil hat' rambling but I wouldn't put it pass that LVA shower.
The official word from the company is that they started work on this before the pandemic, looking for "the next stage in the evolution of home drinking" or words to that effect. And of course Diageo would have the effect on pubs in mind when they release something like this. The pubs are their biggest and most lucrative customer.
I need to follow up to this now.
So I tried the official can tonight with an official pint glass. Perfect dome, no spill. No complaints.
Tried a surger can and that was fine as well. Which begs the question why not just pack the unit with the surger cans?.
I noticed when having the first tonight that once you turn the unit on you need to immediately start pouring as it turns off after about 30seconds and blasts a pulse every few seconds as you pour.
I reckon with the widget can, I delayed the pour and the unit either never surged or barely did before turning off.
I've tried another widget can and it's the same as the surger unit/jewellery cleaner so that's a good sign as I was happy with that set up and the cans work out the same price as importing surger cans.
Just to conclude I'd say the surger unit gives a longer and bigger surge and maybe is slightly more consistent, but it's a plug in device with a lot of hassle so this is a better all around option.
I've set to see that pub style surge from the few cans so far compared to the surger unit, but will test it more.
There was a lack of widgets last year. Remember the fuss over the smaller cans with the built in widget.
