Some interesting first round matches!
Hope it's a good tournament, with no limitations on crowd size there should be a great atmosphere.
Haha. It’s the Craig Ferguson joke about Paul McCartney and Angela Lansbury.
Bad timing on getting a cold sore this week for the cup photos
I'm still p****d with Michael Chang for doing that during his 1989 French Open winner's speech. I have a long memory ...
No they weren’t born.
This is one of the reasons I have prime video is because of the fact they have live tennis.
The main reason I use pirate TV apps is because of the fact of live tennis :D
edit: oh ****, better delete this, if I knew how :D
Raducanu now 23 in the live rankings, 14 in the live (calendar year) race to the WTA finals. It's unlikely but not impossible for her to make the top 8 for the WTA finals. It's now unthinkable she won't get a wild card for Indian Wells in a month's time, which has by far the most points on offer in the rest of the regular season.
Oh yeah, and Lizzie has sent her a telegram. Or someone pretending to be Lizzie, more likely.
Eh I just watched all the other games on a stream, quick google, and boom. I dunno why people pay for anything
Great to have 2 new stars on the scene - so refreshing.
Haha, I wasn't quite as serious as it comes across in text. She does seem like a great young woman so I am happy for her.
I do hope she can repeat that performance at Wimbledon too, especially after how last year went. The pressure on her now will be huge. Fingers crossed she can cope with it.
Seems the 9/11 comments by leylah Fernandez is going over well with Americans.
Funny
She was 150th
The BBC sports personality of the year 2021 is locked up surely.
John McEnroe wasn’t too complementary about her either, that seems to have been forgotten. Wonder what he’ll say now,
That was an enjoyable game of tennis.
I hadnt seen either player play before.
Fernandez has the more rounded game, very clever player for her age, a wide range of shotmaking.
I see she took out alot of big names enroute to the final whereas Radecanu had a much easier route.
Perhaps this could be the beginning of a longstanding rivalry.
Yes, apparently Liz has less than zero interest in tennis, never goes to Wimbledon.
All the Olympians who thought they'd be fighting it out have just been leapfrogged. As sporting fairytales go, this is one of the very biggest.
Because it seems people are saying that the stoppage for blood was a tactic, here’s the rule which seems fairly clear and what happened during the final.
Probably so that there is 'anything' to watch.
Without TV revenues, the tournaments would have a lot less prize money.
1/20 or so with the bookies.
Unless she joins ISIS she wins, she can lose the rest of her matches this year and still wont matter.
To be fair its a wild story , qualifier wins 10 games in a row and does not drop a set.
Not surprisingly Emma Raducanu is trending on Twitter and by Jesus is piers Morgan doing some damage control on his previous utterances after Wimbledon.
Twitter seems to bring out the worst in some people and also give a voice to cretins.
Look at this nonsense
She was there in 2010.
Congrats and well done to Emma Raducanu, delighted she won. Amazing that she went all the way from qualifying without dropping a set. Both players played well and didn't let themselves down, Fernandez a little less consistent throughout the match, had one or two dips which cost her. Felt that Raducanu had to get it done in the second set as she was beginning to tire, had it gone to a third Fernandez looked the fresher of the two and would also have had the momentum too.
Not sure why Fernandez got so upset about the MTO (hopefully not a sign of another drama queen in the making), it was bad timing for both players and it wasn't as if it was a tactical MTO as we often see from other players. Think if she had just stayed calm she could have broken Raducanu once play resumed, tbf Raducanu showed great composure under pressure especially having to deal with the MTO knowing she was so close to winning, yet also one point away from the match turning around.
It'll be interesting to see how both their careers go from here, will this be the career high point for both or the beginning of great careers for both. We've seen so many women in the last few years come win a slam from nowhere and kinda disappear after. Both are probably already financially set for life.
Raducanu in particular comes across as really likeable, seems very level headed and humble also good at the media side of things, she's basically an advertisers deam, can only imagine the commercial sponsorship deals she's in line for.
The odds on both players making the final and Raducanu not to drop a set all the way must have been astronomical a month ago.
It's been a very very long time since I watched Tennis live on TV, there was a time I'd actually take holidays around Wimbledon time (long, long time ago)
Amazon prime did a spectacular job, I was able to see the final live last evening. God it was refreshing not having to listen to and watch the rather tired, stale & typically patronising BBC coverage.
Both Players were magnificent, it was a breath of fresh air, watching to players actually enjoy playing Tennis.
Raducanu was just amazing, the composure just extraordinary. Fernandez equally impressive they both made it look so easy (I know it's not)
Finally have to say Fernandez speech afterwards was brilliant also.
Amazing stuff 😏
Fernandez, what a horrible sport!
Decent match now hopefully they can build on it.
I'd take Raducanu replacing Osaka in the WTA spotlight as a positive outcome.
Fernandez let herself down a bit when Raducanu got plastered.
I wouldn't call her a horrible sport, exactly - she's young, that was her first final, and I'd say emotion/stress/tension got the better of her.
But someone needs to get it into her head fairly rapid that getting wound up about situations entirely outside her control will only damage her rhythm and concentration - she did herself far more harm than good giving out yards to the referee.
I so wish I could lip-read though!!
That was the first match I'd watched in the tournament, as it was FTA (thank you C4!!) - and what a match. And what a package Raducanu seems to be..... after the meltdown at Wimbledon, to come back and win the whole bloody US Open from qualifying and in such style - well, that's just amazing.
(as an aside, they kept going on about being the first qualifier ever to get to a final and then win a Grand Slam...... but what about Boris Becker? was it because he was a wild-card? or unseeded? what was the difference there? Too long ago for me to remember properly!)
Hopefully she can keep her head now and just keep progressing. Exiting prospect for sure!
Looks like Channel 4 made the right call:
Congratulations to
@EmmaRaducanu
! A peak audience of 9.2m watched her historic #USOpenFinal victory on
