I expect the traffic in Galway to be horrendous after school starts back and offices start to open.
That's a safe assumption to make.
Another one bites the dust
Another politician's press release masquerading as news.
"One of the goals of the project is to provide greater access for Arduan, in order to facilitate the development of housing in the area.
City Councillor Alan Cheevers said that the new junction will be more 'pedestrian friendly' for people in the area.
'Especially people who may work or be visiting the Galway Clinic, and also for cyclists. It will also offer bus priority.'"
So the main purposes of this is to allow development in Ardaun and to facilitate a single private business - which should never have been allowed to have been built there in the first place. There may be other benefits as well but they're mentioned well down the list ...
Rather than building on the many available spaces within the city boundary, lets just keep pushing the city further and further out. Let's just keep on repeating the same mistakes while expecting different results.
"and also for cyclists"
Will there be cycle lanes through this junction?
There will be a fully segregated cycle lane (a la SQR) from that junction to the Huntsman. It forms part of the bus connects plan to add another bus lane on the Dublin Road
More info here
Pulled out the drawing. Looks like cycle lanes through to Galway Clinic from City. Non across the other way so will be a 2-part turn to Oranmore from city for those not wanting to get in the mix of cars through the junction. No bad, could be better.
Ya it wont be a very attractive environment for cycling looking at that drawing but could have been worse.
These junction changes are all about throughput - look at the size of the stacking lanes!
For Oranmore to City Cycling- focus should really be on the Old Dublin Road. (Coast Road) Two dual carraigeways service Oranmore to the City, the Coast Road should be prioritised for other modes really.
"For Oranmore to City Cycling- focus should really be on the Old Dublin Road. (Coast Road)"
Yeah that's a very good point actually!
Any word on the ring road? Today is the extended deadline for a decision...
Pushed back until October now apparently.
...
A laughing stock at this stage.
Regardless of your preferred outcome, their inability to make a decision is brutal.
These ongoing delays are cruel for those with homes along the proposed route.
Do you think they're delaying a decision in the hope that the government cancel it and move on with other options
It’s certainly beginning to look like it. If it goes ahead it will undoubtably be the biggest infra project in the county for a long time, I think they are actually afraid to make a decision one way or another!
The govt won't cancel it while it's pending a decision.
If ABP reject it then I'd say its dead and the GTS review next year will get a boatload more money to implement P&R's, additional bus lanes, bike lanes etc etc etc
If ABP approve it, it'll end up in the courts for years
Delayed for years is where it needs to be: we have no idea what transport needs will be post pandemic.
Can't find any reasons given for the last few delays. I could understand if they were requesting addition reports or details but it does look like they've bottled it. A decision needs to be made.
I'll have to flip to actively supporting a tram.
Dustin campaigned for a Dart to Dingle.
Anyone proposing a Luas to Loughgeorge will get my vote.
Public transport going back to 100% capacity next week.
unreal traffic today all bottlenecks at lights...
The upgrade to the Martin Roundabout will be ready to start in November, but they'll likely wait until after Xmas so as not to cause disruption during the Xmas shopping season
Some insane stuff happening on the town roads recently. It is pretty hair-raising stuff. Why would you floor the accelerator when the light goes green even though you can see the traffic jam 300 metres away? Or seeing the slow moving traffic on Market Street, you screech down the narrow Bowling Green
Is it the return of the commute, schools/colleges back, the weather, the staycationers,..?
Students are back, so.
From my observations it's usually parents, etc. late for work after dropping the little ones to the door of the school. They can't be expected to wait for silly things like traffic lights
Taffic is back to as bad as it ever was. Q bridge, Headford Rd, Bohormore a car park in both directions at rush hour.
The Salthill Cycleway trial is up for vote again on Monday, IMO this is a very good Twitter thread on the topic...
Deferred for a few weeks

Mayor brands cycling infrastructure across city as “abysmal and dangerous”
She's not wrong
